Was it an undiscovered species?
In today's news there is a story of an ancient English settlement, found recently at the bottom of the English Channel. Scientists theorize that the settlement was covered by water when the glaciers melted and the English Channel was formed. However, no one can explain why the climate warmed at that time. I therefore have a theory to propose. Since there was no industry to burn fossil fuels and increase the carbon content of the atmosphere, it must have occurred naturally. And the only way that could have happened is from the existing animal kingdom at the time. But there is no evidence of a huge animal population. From this I conclude there must have been a species of huge dinosaur. It was to the land mass what megaladon was to the ocean.
This monster must have eaten tons of vegetation and given off volumes of flatulence. That flatulence acted like bovine flatulence today and raised the temperature of the planet. Since this monster dinosaur has not been discovered or named yet, I will name it for my paleontologists colleagues. I call it the: ![]() FLATCHULESAURUS Richard J. |

Your frequently demonstrated in depth scientific knowledge has convinced me those guys at the National Academy of Science should just give it up and get fast food jobs.

Re: Was it an undiscovered species?
Large animals do not really have an effect on the climate. They are the top of the food chain pyramid. Like any pyramid the top is very small, it is the base of the pyramid that has a huge mass. Bacteria, algae, microscopic animals and insects emit the majority of gasses.
Or am I responding too serious now? |

Re: Was it an undiscovered species?
The fatuousness of the original post aside, I read something that was pretty interesting from slashdot a couple of weeks ago and was just reminded of it, reading this:
Of Cosmic Rays and Dangerous Days -- Berardelli 2007 (801): 1 -- ScienceNOW I'm not really sure what to make of it - I'm interested to reed some peer review or else hear from someone more familiar with this study. It does seem like a remarkable coincidence, on its face, albeit a difficult theory to test. Perhaps we could bombard members of various species with muons. If nothing else, that might please the agenda'ed Luddites - even if we are doing research that might not please them, at least we're killing something from nature in the process. And, by the way, the fact that the Earth warmed once, without humans causing it, does not logically imply, in any way, that humans are incapable of causing such a thing. This line of thinking would be like defending myself on a murder charge by saying, "look, George Washington died, and I didn't kill him - so clearly, I didn't kill this victim either."

Re: Was it an undiscovered species?
I think this thread should be in the Just for fun area.
