Re: BREAK OUT the CIGARS!! M$ loses BIG

A few days agoI had to reinstall XP on my desktop PC because the system had been corrupted by a virus. It took me hours to reinstall XP and to update the system with all those service packs and patches available. There were about 100 updates that had to be installed even after Service Pack II had been installed. I guess at least once a week they find a new security hole that needs to be fixed. I can't do it right now. But I decided to switch over to Apple as soon I buy a new computer. I really got enough of this shit. The big advantage of Microsoft used to be that you could get new software very "easily". But those times a gone, cause you always risk that along with the new software you get all kinds of viruses, Trojan horses or other malware.

As I understand it - there are no more appeals - this is final.

Gates? He won't feel even the slightest injury from this.

Shipping a version of Win without Media Player? That's pretty pathetic. Do they really think that anyone cares enough either way about Media Player?

True, he's too rich.

Jail time is needed.

Of course, nobody deserve prison time for the sole reason that they are rich. The reason for becoming rich must be the cause of the prison sentence.

It seems like a fairly big flop, but I'm wondering what people here are using.

PC users still prefer Windows to Vista - Telegraph

Just caught this today on slashdot... It's looking more and more to me like Vista is a pretty big failure. I mean, people are obviously buying it, but I can't remember another major MS OS where people were actually complaining and requesting older ones. And, when you factor in the relative development time/effort/money of this one compared to the other ones, it looks pretty bad.

Makes me wonder if they haven't gone in the wrong direction, and should have issued a series of quasi-patches or something. It seems to me that the GUI for OS (which is what the vast majority of users, including commercial ones care about) is relatively standardized now. With the ubiquitousness of distributed applications and browser based technology, I'm wondering if the development time spent on Vista isn't going to turn out to be Microsoft's Netscape.

...yeah - penalizing Microsoft for success is asinine (and the quote above is the absolute epitome of such silliness). I do believe that they've practiced extremely unethical business practices (i.e. violating IP law and tying the little guy up in court until he's bankrupt and it becomes a moot point, issuing software, knowing in advance it will damage their customers, etc), but that isn't to say that they should arbitrarily be punished. Nail 'em for anti-trust where appropriate, or any real business law violations.

Of course, I have no real love or hate for any particular technological branding - I use whatever does the job best as I need it. A lot of Microsoft's products have sucked historically, but they've hardly got the market cornered on shoddy software.

I am not in the IT world anymore, however I still have contacts and I am in a "heavy computer use" field. What is surprising to me is that I have basically heard nothing. It is as if it wasn't even released yet.
Like I stated before corporate purchased a legion of new PC's - and they have XP Pro on them.
I know a guy who owns a computer shop here in town - he says basically the same thing you just did - people are requesting XP (if they know to) - and yes that is indeed strange.
I note Halo 2 will only work on Vista - I have little doubt this was done on purpose, I can think of no other game released so close to an OS date that it would not work on the previous OS...I will look forward to the crack for that as soon as it is available.

The best thing about Vista is that I could get a real cheap XP preinstalled notebook during the launch hype because I guess the store thought it would be a hard sell.

I wouldn't really consider that "major".
