Re: Planet in Peril

We have a 75' housboat that consumes about 800-1000 gal of fuel in 7 days. Then there are the 4-6 jet skis on the trip consuming more fuel again. We no longer use the HB for the past 2 year... just to much $$$ and it seems those that go with use forget to pay back their share of the cost!! I'll be going to ride the 'busa at a track this weekend just for fun and I'd hate to give that up. However, there will come a point when we'll not have much of a choice. Hopefully we choose before then. |

Re: Planet in Peril
*agrees with denie*
therein lies the problem mate. there is a great and fun world out there, if you've got the resources to enjoy it...and if you've worked hard to make the coin to indulge in them pleasures, its very hard to suddenly live a monastic life 'o denial, just so future generations can share in it. look matey...if i put a cannon next to yer noggin, and i said, "live sensibly and conserve, or imma blow a tunnel through your temple", you'd do it. 'cept no one lives like that, and who can blame them? what fun is there in a life of conservating one's resources? in a country whar folks are barely compelled to save for their own retirement, the idea of saving resources for those that will come after us is a tough case to make. and for those of us who have the monies to do it, we've earned the right to hog more than our share 'o the pie. thats america, its the american way. lemme just give ye one more example... here in charlotte north carolina, we've experienced a record setting lack 'o rain. lake norman's levels are falling at an alarming rate. small townships sourrounding charlotte are talking about ways to divert water, since reseviors are drying up, and there has been talk (talk only) of limiting things like watering one's lawns. so what do a bunch of our civic minded citizens do? they drilled for water on their own property and are using their own wellwater to merrily water their lawns! to assauge any sense of guilt, they also have posted signs on their lawns, stating, "this water is not public water, its my well water". in the end, of course, its everyone's water. hehehehe, its actually sorta funny. what their signs are really saying, is, "this water is mine, fuck you". there are folks, folks on this very board, who read posts like this and start laughing to themselves. the thing that they dont understand, is i'm laughing too, and to a degree, so are you denie. we're attached to our lifestyles, its very hard to unlearn a lifetime of gluttony in the face of a threat that still seems very abstract to many. i guess, in the back of me own mind, is the fervent hope that techonology will save us. a silver bullet that will put our all troubles to rest...thats what i be hopin' fer. its like, ummm....one of them ads on tv, where they be showing before and after pictures of fat peoples. "look at how much weight i lost, and i still got to eat mac and cheese, burgers and pizza!!!!, just enroll in the (fill in the blank) diet plan and you too can lose weight without being hungry!". thats what imma hopin' fer. AHOY!!!!!!! -meadhallpirate Last edited by MeadHallPirate; 10-26-2007 at 11:10 AM. |

Re: Planet in Peril
Did you actually watch it? What do you have to provide that disproves points made during it?

Or at least such in the waste that we produce, whether it be plastic or nuclear waste. Both of which, aren't going away anytime soon even though we've used them beyond our capabilities. Though you are correct, we as a whole are the problem. The riches nations on earth take resources like water for granted (do you know where you water comes from? I don't), even though the history of human civilization it self centers around water more than any other resource. We as a species simply don't give a damn about the generation after us or our children's children for that matter. Thus a portion of the population of the world is threatened even more than it is at the moment. That being said, who honestly doesn't believe in climate change by this point and time? The details I'll grant you may be fuzzy or disagreed upon, but the fact that our climate is changing should be apparent to all by now. Even if there isn't quiet enough data to see the full picture, and unlikely to be for the future with NASA's budget going to moon bases and Mars missions instead (after we finally complete the ISS for its five years of use anyway). Oh well, that being said, whatever our fate as a species is our own doing and own deserving for our stupidity. |

Re: Planet in Peril
I think most of this show reports what we already know (if you are still in denial regarding GW then you should challenge yourself and watch it - If you are a devoted ignorant then this will not convince you - as nothing will. ) - the interesting addition for me was Imhoffs refusal to comment on the show.
Will Imhoff and other "GW hoax myth creator's for oil and profit" find themselves capable of spinning a new myth to fool the public into believing that the contribution of "good Neocon CO2" is beneficial for the purpose of improving the economy. For a better economy may then some day address the climate crisis?

Re: Planet in Peril
Yes that the whole myth of global warming is exactly that, a myth, which apparently is very marketable to those incapable of thinking for themselves.
And people thinking advertising is a lost industry... |

Re: Planet in Peril
YarrrRRRRRR!
Speedyer mate, imma not bankin' that technology will save us, but its me only hope. think of all the baby boomers who are putting away a pittance for their retirement. they all know they shall age. they all know they may get sick, and somewhere, buried in their awareness, is the recognition that they aren't saving properly for their final decade or two here on earth. so what are they hoping for? they are hoping that somehow, despite evidence to the contrary, it all works out in the end. thats what i am hoping happens too, for the enviornment. and to the mighty Viper, watching all the "planet in peril" documentaries in the world are not going to change the minds of peoples who be believing that mankind-induced global warming is a farce. if anything, if you make'm watch them shows, they just feel mounting contempt (for contempt, see post above this one), and impatience, and white knuckled anger...or they'd just laugh their arses off. imagine if you put Moon in a theatre seat and pried his eyelids open (a la clockwork orange, poor alex, aye!) and made him watch fox news, 24/7. do you think that would change his mindset? the real problem is that even those who do sorta believe that man is speeding up global warming aren't living their lives as if their lives depended on reversing the trend. we all just party on, drink our rum, and do our thing. ok, ok, maybe we recycle or somethin', but thats probably about it. To say that global warming is a myth is to say that the near-surface temperature of the earth has remained exactly the same since the big bang. Ridiculous, I think you'll agree. I'm trying to think of a way to express this to people 'incapable of thinking for themselves'......hmm, anyone seen the film 'Ice Age'? Last edited by Mr Toastrack; 10-29-2007 at 03:24 PM. |

Arr, me hearty, I need to be thankin' ye for ye swashbucklin' efforts against these scurvy dogs who should surely be walkin' the plank for the highest of high treason to their planet, and havin' an opinion seldom backed up by scientific evidence!
Make no mistake, If I had me way, them lily-livered landlubbers would be drinkin' their grog down in Davey Jones' locker! |

Re: Planet in Peril
Those who are intelligent and perpetuate the "GW myth" do so knowing that it is in fact not a myth. I do believe that those like Traveler believe the "myth" and do not perpetuate it through intelligence, but ignorance.
