I guess some find it boring to question questionable "facts".

Oh well.

Nothing to discuss at this point is there ?

Ahoy Captain Trips *salutes smartly to the cappy*

talking about global warming, debatin' whether it is, or is not happening, and discussing whether mankind is impacting this phenomenon... imma not questioning whether debating that is a good idea. it is.

but, again, even if the science behind global warming is flawed (one way or another), it seems sorta besides the point.

would you argue against preserving green space on our earth?
would you argue against energy efficient design standards? ¥
would you argue against requiring cleaner power plants?
would you argue against tougher emissions standards?

¥ - wouldn't it be fantastic to see, for example, japan emulating american car makers, and to see them playin' "catch up" with detriot's innovative designs. i think it would be a mighty fine thing to behold, imagine it: out from michigan would come a 50 mpg auto that the world falls in love with!
not only would this be great for making our air cleaner and lowerin' our dependency on fossil fuels, but it would also be a great market-based solution too, AYE!!!!!

No to all.

Aye ? I thought it was US making the gigantic clunky gas suckers not Japan ?

In either case it would be marvy to see smaller, more effecient cars rather than our gigantic "look at me I make (and waste) a lot of $$" mobiles.

*bonks himself on the noggin*

arg, i was unclear, damn me. what i meant is, it would be terrific if the us auto industry could reclaim its former spot, as king 'o the hill, and make these wonderous cars you alluded to, and to see the japanese tryin' to play catchup. it would be a nice role reversal. AYE!!!! avast ye matey!!!!

Speedyer mate,

imma not bankin' that technology will save us, but its me only hope. think of all the baby boomers who are putting away a pittance for their retirement. they all know they shall age. they all know they may get sick, and somewhere, buried in their awareness, is the recognition that they aren't saving properly for their final decade or two here on earth.

so what are they hoping for?

they are hoping that somehow, despite evidence to the contrary, it all works out in the end. thats what i am hoping happens too, for the enviornment.
I'm just saying that hoping isn't going to fix the problem, as far as climate change goes we need to seriously get more involved on all levels. No, I don't mean we should do every little thing that is listed at the end of Al Gores Film. Though I'll grant him that he does have some good ideas, oh wait they aren't all his ideas and not everyone agrees that he's the most indisputably the most knowledgeable person on this issue. Anyway, what I am talking about is living more in sync with nature. Wait, hear me out before thinking I've gone hippy, I'm simply stating that we need to start living more efficient and reasonable lives. Leaving New Orleans where it is for example, is hardly reasonable and so is living so close to the coast.

Or polluting your water source for that matter. I mean the world is going to be facing a serious water crisis very soon, even more serious that what we're facing now. All because we'll realized too late that there may be billions of people in the world but that there simply isn't fresh water to go around. This will of course only worsened by climate change because you remember those glaciers that are drying up well a lot of people get their drinking water from them.

Overall, it benefits us absolutely to live smartly with the resources we have at our disposal, because otherwise we're going to suffer because of our irresponsible behavior. I mean water after all is the most precious resource known to man, and yet at the same time its probably the most taken for granted (at least in the United States).

Of course, asking for reason from the human race is maybe asking too much?

Re: Planet in Peril

*cheers speedyer*

aye mate, i agree with absolutely everythin' ye just wrote, aye!!!!

i just don't be believin' that mankind has it within' his capacity to change in the manner you described. i look at the looming water crises in georgia...the bigger looming water crises in the american west....the environmental lunacy in china...and don't even get me started on the horrors texaco has visited upon africa...the vanishing everglades (that we were supposed to fix, i thought)...lordy.

thar be too much $$$$ to pick up, and as we so often hear, "well, we do need to do fix ______, but not at the cost of hurtin' our economy and our ability to compete".

but aye, i still do hold out hope for a magic bullet to save us, at one point (i'll probably be dead when the crises truly occurs, so me concern for this is kinda vague, as i have me no kids, so im not too worried about the legacy that our ways leave behind).

i can see a number 'o things happening to succor the hurts that have been dealt the world.

- we could have a biological war, the kind that wipes out 75% of humanity, but leaves the planet intact.
- we could have an outbreak, one that is totally organic in nature (meaning not a man made thing that was used as a weapon) that also decimates the world population.
- we could have a nuclear war, that ends up destroying much of the planet, and having such a ridiculously long half life, that mankind will be set back centuries. maybe nature will fix itself faster than we can get back on our feet.
- or, we could have a silver bullet, courtesy 'o the fine scientists 'o the earth...something that that saves us all.
- or the world as a whole, could suffer the equivelant of a massive stroke. even folks who live lives rich in cholesterol and saturated fat, often find jesus after a quadruple bypass, and live the rest of their days subsisting on high fiber diets, augmented by fresh fruits and steamed vegetables. so maybe a real, horrifyin' scare might change our ways.

these be me hopes fer mankind, long term.

aye.
