It's worth a read

THE GREENHOUSE AFFECT:

Another article that shows how much we don't understand about how very interrelated our environment is. Here is just a sample:
The researchers break new ground by exposing a kind of mega-accounting error: Prior studies had never credited the carbon-dioxide emissions that arise when virgin forests, grasslands and the like are cleared to grow biofuel feedstocks. About 2.7 times more carbon is stored in terrestrial soils and plant material than in the atmosphere, and this carbon is released when these areas are cleared (often by burning) and the soil is tilled. Compounding problems is the loss of "carbon sinks" that absorb atmospheric CO2 in the bargain. Previous projections had also ignored the second-order effects of transferring normal farm land to biofuels, which exerts world-wide pressure on land use.

For those of us who are interested, it's worth a read.

Even without taking this into account the case for biofuels is not that great.

Re: It's worth a read

We use far more oil than we should, and biofuel is merely a band-aid on the problem.
But having said that, there would be a good side to the argument, as soon as they start focusing more on agricultural waste and non-food crops instead of using FOOD as fuel.

Re: It's worth a read

And round and round it goes "Man the reason for the season"

Remove the Human race from the planet and it will still be doing what it is doing and going to do, IE Global Warming...!!!!

Get a grip and look at what we as a race can do to live in the changing planet we call home.

Even if we where to stop all that we do this planet will continue to change, warm up and cool down like it has for it's full life.

And oh........... by the way both the righties and lefties that are thinking that I am off base............. get your head out of the sand and frak off......

Have a nice day.

By reducing our use of oil, the price of it will come down for the developing nations. This is one of the main goals of the GW movement.

Nobody is arguing that. But even though the planet goes through cycles those who tout that as the ONLY reason for climate change (not to mention the foul air we have to breathe), and they don't seem to notice the fact that we DO pump astonishingly large amounts of heat and gases into the atmosphere. You don't have to know one single statistic about the atmosphere or the climatic history of the planet to realize that MUST be doing something. But it appears a lot of people hear, "well, the Earth has changed climate before" and they go back to watching TV, secure in the knowledge that this is all perfectly natural.

And that's the OTHER problem. Like it or not, petroleum is a finite resource and we need to make sure we will have plenty of it for the foreseeable future. And that, at this time, means using less of the stuff to get us down to the convenience store. Although I believe more people know this than let on, if the oil ran out tomorrow, the ENTIRE civilized world would grind to an immediate halt. And long before that, the economic impact will be felt by all of is, in increased costs for anything that has any connection to oil, which is damned near everything.

But how fast will it happen? That's something neither side knows for sure, but even without citing one single statistic, it is more than logical to assume we sure as hell aren't slowing the change down any.

I'm neither a "righty" or a "lefty" and I am quite secure in what I've just said. If you care to debate the points I made in this post, feel free.

Maybe. But I don't really care about that. I'm concerned about the larger picture, especially the impact on this country.
