WWF Rejects Tasteless Ad

Who could possibly think this was a good idea?

Text reads - The tsunami killed 100 times more people than 9/11. The planet is brutally powerful. Respect it. Preserve it.

Re: The Geniuses at WWF

The WWF condemned this ad.

Quote:
But the WWF says the image was created on specifications by a Brazilian ad agency and was rejected

"WWF strongly condemns this offensive and tasteless ad, and did not authorize its production or publication," the group said in a news release issued late Tuesday.

"It is an unauthorized use of our logo and we are aggressively pursuing action to have it removed from websites where it is being currently featured."

Re: The Geniuses at WWF

Apparently, a Brazilian advertising agency thought it would be a good idea, and created it and submitted it to the WWF unsolicited. The WWF rejected it as soon as they saw it, and the folks responsible for the ad got the sack.

World Wildlife Fund 'appalled' by tasteless 9/11 terror ad

Quote:
"WWF strongly condemns this offensive and tasteless ad and did not authorize its production or publication. It is our understanding that it was a concept offered by an outside advertising agency seeking our business in Brazil. The concept was summarily rejected by WWF and should never have seen the light of day. It is an unauthorized use of our logo and we are aggressively pursuing action to have it removed from websites where it is being currently featured. We strongly condemn the messages and the images portrayed in this ad. On behalf of WWF, here in the US and around the world, we can promise you this ad does not in any way reflect the thoughts and feelings of the people of our organization."

WWF Says 9/11 Ad 'Unauthorized'
I've donated to the WWF in the past, and I was getting ready to contact them and express my displeasure. It seems, though, that the WWF is just a victim of some ad agency's stupidity here.

My bad. Topic changed. Interestingly this ad won an award.

Re: The Geniuses at WWF

I can certainly see how people directly effected by 9/11 would find this tasteless, however, there is a deeper point here. Climate change kills people on a magnitude far greater than any terrorist attack, yet we don't react with the type of outrage that something like 9/11 brings out in poeple. Im not suggesting that outrage is not a appropriate as a response to 9/11, I'm only suggesting that there is a lack of outrage at the amount of suffering caused by degradation of our environment, the direct suffering caused by resource extraction, and the suffering we know is in the hopper for our children.

There are estimates put out by the UN, and those are in the hundreds of thousands annually. I recognize though that there are problems making a tally of that sort. But it is undeniable that pollution, drought, heat waves, many cancers, etc cause death in the thousands globally on an annual basis.

Just look at smog and the thousands killed by that just in north america alone.

Smog is not a result of climate change but it is anthropogenic nonetheless. The point remains that our outrage is often narrowly conceived, and very selective.

no question that smog is a result of man-made emissions trapped by natural air flows. sorry but I thought it w3as necessary to call into question the "climate change" impact you alluded to. pollution is bad, I have no trouble signing onto that.

That's ok. I accept that some people are just not convinced that AGW is real and effecting us at present.

it may or may not be my friend, but when you make the claim that its actually killing people, thats a line that draws my attention.

for an ultra hard core conservative, I'm something of a tree hugger as well (I appreciate that this is sort of a disconnect for some). I have been for decades and i do not see that changing.

I await evidence I can believe in that "climate change" is an actual problem and ot some sort of form of natural ebb and flow but I have not seen that as yet. I have seen that we are buggering ourselves with deforestation and needless polution but I have also seem that we have worked very hard to reduce the effects of manufacturing (in this country) on the overall problem.

I hope you can appreciate we both have simalar goals even if we differ on some particulars. I want a cleaner planet and I believe you do too.
