Uh huh. Yeah, right. 50 days. We have a month and a half to save the world from global warming, even though we in the USA have had record breaking cold temperatures already this fall. If we wait three months we're all dead, but 50 days we can save the world. 60 days? Armageddon. 40 days? Xanadu.

It's embarrassing that we have heads of state spouting this crap. Thankfully Gordon Brown won't survive the next election in the UK. Unfortunately, there are several more asshats like him around the world who still have influence.

The problem is that the science isn't something most 12 year olds can understand, when you break it down it becomes far too easy for the skeptics the mislead and misinterperate it. Funnily enough, having a cold winter once in a while dosn't mean that its not happening; these things will dip and rise with time. The important thing is the hard science and the general trend.

Brown is definatly over-playing this, but with good cause.

I think its pretty clear what Brown meant. If the international community does not come to some sort of agreement and plan of action @ Copenhagen and the world just goes on "business as usual" afterwords, well, yeah - unmitigated AGW will play itself out. How it plays itself out is subject to debate, sure, but its pretty clear that a rapidly changing climate is not a good thing for any species on the planet.

The climate of the earth has changed since its birth. The Sahara Desert used to be a jungle. The idea that we can do anything about it is patently absurd. Obama can sign any treaty he likes, but without 2/3's Senate support it's meaningless. If this round is anything like Clinton's, Obama will be lucky to get a couple of dozen Dems and two Republicans. Sure, there's a lot more Socialists in the Senate than Clinton had, but most of the Dems have some hope of being reelected.

The climate right now is changing at a rate unprecedented in any previous global climate change episode. The current climate is changing as a result of industrial civilization.

We might not be able to stop this culture from destroying the life support systems of the earth, correct.

Why should it happen? Do we have to behave this way?

No. You are victim of bullshit. The period of 2000-2008 is warmer than the period from 1990-1999. This is just plain old fact. Don't be confused or mislead by short term variability.

I think Andrew has the gist of what Brown meant. Like he (Andrew) said, they are saying that if they don't get an agreement at Copenhagen then they won't get one ever or in years upon years. Of course he exaggerating. There is simply no reason they can't keep on working on a plan to achieve their goals (no saying that I agree with them) consistently and constantly even if they don't pass anything at Copenhagen. It's simply a scare tactic to try and push something through.
