Collapse of all Commercially Exploited Fish by Mid-Century

Quote:
The authors point out that even at current fish consumption levels, global fisheries are in severe crisis as demand outstrips supply and declining stocks are being diverted from local markets to affluent markets, with serious consequences for the food security of poorer countries and coastal communities. Global stocks have been declining since the late 1980s and there have been more than 100 cases of marine extinctions.

"These trends imply the collapse of all commercially exploited stocks by mid-century," state the authors. "Yet the dire status of fisheries resources is largely unrecognized by the public, who are both encouraged to eat more fish and are misled into believing we live in a sea of plenty."
Fish Consumption Guidelines Not Environmentally Sustainable, Canadian Experts Say

Overfishing and environmental contamination are going to lead to the destruction of fish as a food stuff. Aquaculture still relies on wild fish in the form of fish meal and fish oil so without commercial fish supplies those will fail as well. Just another in the continuing trend for the unrestrained selfishness of humans to endanger their own long term survival. As a side note to this issue the fish meal and fish oil is also crucial to land farming since it is used as feed for chickens and pigs.

Re: Collapse of all Commercially Exploited Fish by Mid-Century

I have a real worry as to what is happening to the Sturgeonfish numbers in the Caspian Sea and across Kazhakstan and Russia, Caviar could be a thing of the past if we are not careful. Unlike the Wal-martization of other rare products, that stuff is not only getting more and more rare and harder and harder to come by, but it is getting more and more expensive.

I'm not normally one to complain about money, but at 3K for a couple hundred grams, for the finest stuff it is getting too much, even for its exceptional quality and taste.

God help us all.

I don't understand.
Why does anyone care.
If we don't give a rats ass how our shopping habits affect our fellow countrymen - why give a flying doughnut about fish?

They are connected. Besides, even if global warming was not likely to make the problem worse, it is possible for people to have multiple concerns.

And regardless, it is the same behavior that causes both problems.

Hmm...17 bucks an lb is not cheap.

There's a fishmonger that sells wild Alaskan salmon in Waco for 13 bucks, in Wal-marts in Dallas they sell farmed Salmon at 8 bucks per pound.

To me it didn't seem like that much of a difference. I preffer smoked salmon, just as a prefference.

According to the research I am doing the price of fish is the one area of meat production where the cost increase steadily.
