East Antarctica now losing Ice

Along with west Antarctica satellite observations are showing a net loss of ice in east Antarctica, which has been stable up until now.

This could still be short term variability and not the beginning of a long term trend, but given what is happening to ice all over the world, this is worrisome.

Quote:
While the earth has been warming overall, the giant East Antarctic ice sheet — which holds about five times as much ice as West Antarctica and Greenland combined — has actually been growing in size. That's because East Antarctica is far too cold, even in summer, for any appreciable melting to happen. And since a warmer world means more precipitation, any extra snow that falls on East Antarctica stays there indefinitely.

Or at least, that's how things have gone until recently. But a new study in the journal Nature Geoscience suggests that this growth spurt may have come to an end. Starting in about 2006, says lead author Jianli Chen of the Center for Space Research at the University of Texas at Austin, East Antarctica started declining, just like the world's other great ice sheets. "The amount [of decline] right now isn't very big, but the trend is alarming," he says.

Re: East Antarctica now losing Ice

As I don't suspect that I'll be travelling to east Antarctica anytime soon, this worries me not.

Seriously, what would you have us do? Alter our lifestyles to preserve ice on a continent that a relative handful of humans will ever actually see?

The impact is on seal level rise, not on potential humans living in Antarctica. I believe you live near the coast, no?

And, by God, we sure don't want those seals rising...

Yeah, its hard to become very worried about this. Maybe with all that ice off the land we can find some good places to drill.

In one of those emails, somebody said a global warming media "blitz" is coming in December prior to Copenhagen. I wonder if this is one of the first salvos?

I have some great beach front property, in Antarctica, that I bought real cheap. It's just waiting for some warmer weather so I can turn it into a resort.

The satellite that measured this was launched in march 2002, and the net ice loss began in 2006, and the results were published this year. How they got the ice to melt prior to copenhagen is pretty damn amazing...

But, is there going to be more exposure of the science leading up to copenhagen? Absolutely.

Is there going to be more deniers lying about the warming and engaging in fraud leading up to global warming? Absolutely.

What would 3ft or more of sea rise over the next 50 years mean to all coastal populations on the planet?

Ahhh... they would move back?

Listen Andrew... in the developed world it would mean... not much... MAYBE some more breakwater work.

In the undeveloped world it would mean... not much... the people would simply move inland.

think of Holland... when you're 15 feet below sea level what difference is there if you are now 18 feet below sea level? Or 20 feet?

Some of us are men... we conquer our environment or we adapt.

All depends is it a hypothetical population in danger of a hypothetical 3 ft rise within a hypothetical 50 years?
