This weekend Nashville and other parts of middle and northern Tennessee have endured the worst flooding the area has ever knows. Storms dumped several inches of rain over 3 days and there was just nowhere for it to go, not unlike the flood in Atlanta a few months ago. There has been a little flooding in the southern part of KY, but I live above Ky Dam, so no danger to me.
There is massive water damage in TN to homes, roads, bridges, schools, businesses, etc.

Some people are saying that we need to be rethinking things like our sewer systems, flood planes, and water run off issues due to global warming.

Ha! Gaylord.
Sounds like it sucks down there. Although, unfortunately, this will be just one of many "natural disasters" that will fall upon the wacky wild US in a given year. Destructive and deadly hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms, flooding, wild fires, earth quakes, severe storms, etc., are pretty much a yearly staple.

That is some serious flooding. Sounds like a couple of rivers could use some levees.

My sister lives outside Nashville and her son and his family live in Nashville. Her son's house is doing okay so far but the neighbor across the street has water almost up to the roof line. The water does have a place to go. The problem is that people have built homes and highways where the water usually goes. Where I lived in Colorado, people built house in an alternate channel for the river. Guess what happened when it flooded?
And flash floods are a different matter. The Red River in the midwest floods most years when the snow mealts. There was 16" of rain in two days upstread from Nashville. In Colorado, a huge basin got 14" in one day and the drainage was through a canyon that was less than 100' wide. That flood killed over 150 and was awesome.
Most city dwellers don't have a clue as to how powerful nature is.
terrible weather got caught in nashville coming back from south Tn dropping off my Grandson and bam they closed I65 had to stay the night in a ritsy hotel(closest to us) and barley got out of the city sunday before they closed it all down again.
Clarksville is slammed water still rising and wont stop till tomorrow sometime , closed down town , people in my area stranded behind another creek it basically is a huge mess
Rak, I'm glad to hear from you! I saw pics of the flooding over your way and was hoping all has been well with you. We used to have a poster from Clarksville, I think it was Mudwistle. I hope he, too, is OK.
I think I read the river isn't due to crest until tomorrow. Right now a lot of sewage is being dumped into downtown Nashville. If I lived in any area with flooding, I would boil my water just to be safe. Some of the little towns are issuing 'boil orders'
First through 5th streets in Nashville are now closed due to the water. But it isn't just Nashville, it is most of middle TN that is flooded.
The lake is very high but I live above the dam. Except for trees falling and ripping out my power yesterday, it has been ok in my little corner.

12 inches of rain in as many hours is the problem. I lived there 20 years and there was never anything like this. I was able to contact a friend by cell phone and she asked if I thought it was global warming. I don't know. I would have attributed it to El Nino if it were an El Nino year.
I went through a very destructive ice storm and a very destructive tornado when I lived there. Not sorry I missed the flood.
So far 10 have been killed: http://www.wsmv.com/weather/23328754/detail.html

As others have already said, this past weekend, Nashville received around 10 inches of rain - a real record breaker that has caused an astounding amount of flooding. The surrounding rivers swelled and as of this evening have yet to crest, so water continues to rush through the streets and into buildings. Thousands have lost their homes. Businesses have lost everything.
And yet… Obama has yet to acknowledge that anything has even happened in Middle Tennessee… most likely because he’s in damage control mode, trying to salvage a response to the LAST disaster. Time is reporting that Gibbs addressed the emergency in today’s briefing.
The One himself, maybe not sure that Tennessee is one of the 57 states, still has had nothing to say regarding the catastrophe. It’s like that caring either depends on your electoral prospects or is it that he is waiting for the next news cycle?…White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs addressed the flood situation in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky in his briefing this morning, and that “[the] FEMA Director [is] headed to the region today.” I’m not sure if this means Administrator Craig Fugate, or Associate Administrator for Response and Recovery Bill Carwile, or even Director Ted Monette from the Office of Federal Coordinating Officer Operations, under A/A Carwile’s office.
Once again we all know that if this were Bush, it would be front page news, along with late night jokes about how someone having to tell him how to spell Tennessee
But it would be nice that The One would think to mention it, wouldn’t it?
It is about all of middle TN and parts of KY that are under water. I, too, have been waiting with baited breath for him to say something. But alas.........
Emergency services are doing pretty well there, and the shelters were up and going without anyone having to tell them. So, BO and FEMA be damned, I'm pretty sure the area will make it. It usually does.
