Well, since BP already said they'd pay for all the damages, I'm guessing that's admission of the fault being on them. I'm sure they'd love to find evidence of sabotage, because this whole thing doesn't exactly make them look good.

This weekend I was talking to someone when the topic meandered around to the oil spill off of the Louisiana coast. My comment was "so much for off shore drilling." The person I was talking to said he kind of wondered if it was sabbotage for one reason or another. I had not thought of that, but it does seem to be a way of telling us not to bother. Any thoughts?

BP is only taking fiscal responsibility for this but lay the blame on Transocean, the owner of the rig. It doesn't seem to matter to BP that it's their rep on the rig who has the final say on anything that's done.
As for sabotage, some are now blaming North Korea:
Possible North Korea target: Deepwater Horizon oil platform - by Terrence Aym - Page 3 - HeliumAccording to Russian intelligence which released a report in Moscow on May 30, 2010, the NKorean vessel carried a force from the 17th Sniper Corps and departed the Cuban port of Empresa Terminales Mambisas de La Habana April the night of April 18, 2010. Although it's destination was Caracas, Venezuela, it changed course and steamed to within 113 nautical miles of the Deepwater Horizon rig. The mini-sub is estimated to have an effective range of 175 nautical miles.
Then, according to the Russians, the NKoreans launched one of its SSC Sang-o mini-subs (the same kind it used in the attack on the SKorean warship in the Yellow Sea). When the stealth sub reached the offshore oil platform it fired two incendiary torpedoes at the rig's superstructure.

Obama did it.
The intellectual journey that had began with Copernicus displacing humans from the centre of the Universe and continued with Darwin’s insistence that humans are merely modified monkeys has finally focused in on the very essence of life. And there was nothing special about it. The double helix is an elegant structure, but its message is downright prosaic: life is simply a matter of chemistry.
- James Watson

That's a bit inaccurate. They didn't spend $500,000 on a third method of actuating the shutoff valve. The primary two (the hardwired control from the platform and the "dead man" switch that should have detected the break in the pipe and shut the valve) failed. It is entirely possible that the valve itself is damaged from the falling debris from the platform.
If the valve is damaged, having the acoustic trigger wouldn't have helped. That said, I think they should have been mandated anyway.

I stand corrected.
In a field like this, where the risk of enviromental damage is so high in case of accidents, the most strict measures should be in place. Oil, nuclear and so on... I don´t give a shit what it cost the companies. The stricter the measures, the better for all of us.
