Concord bans sale of bottled water

I drink very little water but when I do, it's bottled spring water and that's something you won't get out of the average tap. While I have a filter on my ice and water dispenser on my fridge, it still doesn't taste as good as spring water!
    CONCORD, Mass. --
The town of Concord has banned the sale of bottled drinking water in town beginning in 2011.

"We only have one planet and I just don't want to see it spoiled," said Jean Hill, who introduced the measure at Concord's Town Meeting.

Hill said that New York, Illinois and Virginia, as well as more than 100 cities, have taken action to cut spending on bottled water.

The measured passed by Concord would allow the sale of refillable containers of water, which could still be sold and delivered in town. Only plastic bottles that companies cannot reuse would be banned.

"Water is something we can get from the faucet. You can't turn your faucet on and get soda," said Selectwoman Virginia McIntyre, explaining why other plastic bottles would not be banned.

Supporters say the production of plastic water bottles uses 17 million barrels of oil each year. The beverage industry opposes the measure.

"If you think about the fact that our bottles are getting smaller and if you think about the fact that our bottles are going into the recycle bins in Concord, it's a crazy policy," said Ralph Crowley of Polar Beverages.

The ban on plastic water bottle sales may be largely symbolic. Town officials aren't sure they have the power to enact the ban without approval from the state.

Here's the irony of the bolded section:

CONCORD — It seemed like a good idea to many residents, at least last week, before much of the surrounding area experienced the equivalent of an aquatic apocalypse.

Less than 48 hours before a ruptured water main cut the supply of potable water to about 2 million people in the Boston area, local residents voted to ban all sales of bottled water, an unprecedented measure in the country meant to spur other municipalities to reduce the rising amount of plastic clogging the nation’s streets and landfills.

ooops...smart move there. Gee, the water out of the pipes isn't magic?

Gotta love those Globe reporters, their world view is totally batshit crazy:
"Concord was not one of the communities that lost its water supply, but residents in this enclave about 20 miles west of Boston "

Enclave? It's not a freaking enclave, they aren't secreted away, walled in or hard to get to, there's no secret hand shake, no special requirement to move in; It's the freaking suburbs.

plastic bottles hurt the environment in a myriad of ways. normally i'm against outright bans on things like this but i gotta say i'm not able to find much of a problem with this one.

Not a bottled water drinker myself, but this ban is ridiculous. Heck, pretty much any ban is ridiculous.

i don't drink spring water. it tastes the same as regular filtered water and has no additional health benefits. i actually get a kick out of seeing people in the grocery store struggling to haul away those huge packages of bottles and bottles of water. it just seems incredibly wasteful and pointless.

like i said i'm normally against bans of pretty much anything but i just can't seem to find anything negative about this one.

I think a lot depends on how good your tap water is, whether you have well water or municipal, etc. One town I grew up in had terrible water, especially in the summer with all the chlorine they put in it. And believe it or not, NYC has excellent tap water - I couldn't tell the difference between NYC tap and bottled spring water.

Oddly enough, Boston comes in at #5 as having excellent water. I know Concord isn't Boston, but you'd think they'd have some similarities in quality..

    Cities with the best water:

    1. Arlington, TX
    2. Providence, RI
    3. Fort Worth, TX
    4. Charleston, SC
    5. Boston, MA
    6. Honolulu, HI
    7. Austin, TX
    8. Fairfax County, VA
    9. St. Louis, MO
    10. Minneapolis, MN

So....as long as it doesn't effect you personally....'Ban away' ????? Just don't let them ban anything YOU feel near, and dear, to your own heart?? I see how it is.

I don't drink bottled water....unless I am out, and hot...and really need a drink of water. I don't trust water from someplace, other than my home. But when out...I will drink bottled. I agree that the amount of plastic bottling created in this country is ridiculous. But surely, there is another way than an outright ban??!! How about refillable bottles. They have that in our area, for spring water. You simply bring them back to be refilled, at refilling stations.

Frankly....a LOT of tap water tastes iron'y. As it passes through those 100 year old pipes.....tends to pick up a lot of rust....in some areas. But..on the flip side....you don't get that beneficial flourine, they put in public works water. Which, if you think about it, is a MONUMENTAL waste. Not because there hasn't been noticeable benefits on the teeth of Americans (there has...just compare to any other country, without flourine in their water.) BUT...because we only consume about 1% of the water they enhance with their flourine. The rest goes to our grass, washing our heinies, flushing our body wastes, and cleaning our dishes, etc. Hey...the fact we are running out of flourine....no difference...they'll keep flushing it down the toilet, if you will. Of course...for all we know....the flourine use in our drinking water could account for the increase in cancer rates. About the same timeframe.

Don't you just LOVE when our gov't thinks through all their decisions, and how they will effect us? I mean...just like when they.....oh...not a good example. Well what about when they....oops....no...not then either. But surely when .....nope ...not even close. Never mind......they just don't do that.

One of the early Penn and Teller: Bullshit episodes had them making their own bottled water by filling bottles with a hose and labeling them. They then marketed the hose water to various restaurant patrons. It was funny as hell.

I think there's a HUGE difference in the taste of filtered water and spring water, just as there's a difference in the taste of water from artesian and shallower wells.
As for buying cases of water, it's better than buying cases of coke. When I'm going to the beach or some place where I won't necessarily have access to cold water or cokes, I buy the bottles of water, freeze them and then put them in my ice chest and drink them as they thaw.

I think Baltimore has FANTASTIC water......for bathing in.

At my office....I think it is nearly WEEKLY, we get alerts to not drink the water, cause it has brown stuff in it. Of course....these alerts TYPICALLY come ...SECONDS after finishing my second cup of coffee, for the morning.

We have filters on the water...but....who knows.
