Oil gusher in the Gulf still not fixed!

I knew I shouldn't have waited so long to take that vacation! If this was gushing 5K barrels a day and they are siphoning off less than 2K.....the math isn't that hard to do. I can't even refer to this as a partial success. This is another colossal failure!

Venice, Louisiana (CNN) -- BP said it has collected more than 1,800 barrels of oil since placing a cap over its ruptured undersea well, but video taken Saturday still shows a stream of crude escaping into the Gulf of Mexico.

After many failed attempts, BP was able to place the cap on the well and siphon oil Friday from the well to the surface, where it flowed onto the awaiting drill ship Discover Enterprise.

By Friday afternoon, the company said on its website that it had collected 76,020 gallons of oil in the first 12 hours after it put the cap on the well, which is less than 10 percent of the 798,000 gallons of oil federal authorities estimate is pouring into the Gulf daily.

Over the weekend, BP said it planned to shut four vents on top of a containment cap from which oil was still escaping into the ocean.

Company officials said they hoped that closing the vents would greatly reduce the amount of oozing crude.

Oil has already affected coastal areas of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and was drifting steadily toward Florida.

They haven't closed the vents yet, so it's a bit premature to call this a success or a failure. We'll have to see what happens when the vents are closed.

Of course, the cap could fail when the vents are closed, and we'd be back at square one...

Meanwhile, oil is reaching the beaches of Pensacola, and could hit Destin in a couple days. We haven't even begun to see the full impact of this, IMHO.

Disasters occur and while I do believe this is a tragedy I also think this (like any other incident) is over exaggerated and is leading to outrageous conspiracy theories. I've had to deal with people blaming republicans for creating this plot to discredit the Obama administration (he doesn't need any help with that). What needs to happen is what already is going on people from different backgrounds coming together to solve a common problem something thats been going on since the beginning of time not bombarding me with images of oil covered turtles while that is sad there are definite more important centers of focus needed like keeping "America" its own country and not having "america" as the worlds door mat.

The first I heard that conspiracy theory was this morning on C-SPAN's Washington Journal. Some black lady called in ranting about it's a a conspiracy to make Obama look bad. I wonder how long it will take for it to go viral in left-wing circles.

And if it does go viral, I wonder if the Republicans will make the same mistake they made with the 911 truthers. They ignored them instead of dilligently rebutting them, so by the time 2006 rolled around, over 30% of the population believed 911 was an inside job. And that probably played a huge role in the 2006 and 2008 elections.

I would wager that the same type of people who initially thought this was an Obama conspiracy to make offshore drilling look bad will be the same type of people who buy this latest theory. Not the same people mind you, the same type.

uhm sunshine, the blew past 5k barrels a day 3 weeks ago. The estimate then by a proff. was between 50 and 85k. I just read one that said 12-17k a day. if we get 10% which is what the think they are gettong now, ...well.Its almost biblical.

Re: Oil gusher in the Gulf still not fixed!

I'll lay money that the majority of people are going to wonder why there's still a problem after it's capped

And when it dissipates in a year or so they're all going to say..."well, see....these oil spills aren't so bad."

We've already had people on this very board saying this just shows why we should be drillling more on dry land. (as if, somehow, wells don't blow out there and everyone knows the only environmentally sensitive areas are in the oceans and this is the sole and only type of hazard oil drilling entails etc etc.)

sure they do, what do you consider the greater risk? I think we know.

Re: Oil gusher in the Gulf still not fixed!

I got a job over the weekend working for an environmental consulting company doing a lot of water and sediment sampling along the Gulf Coast. I deploy in 3 days, and I'm excited to get out there. It's good to feel useful.

I'll try to let y'all know from time to time what I see, because I'm going to be right in the middle of it for the foreseeable future.
