Thread: Volcanos: Good News Everyone! Global Warming canceled for another year!

I wonder how many volcanos it would take to stop global warming, and bring us another Ice Age? Or worse. Global warming may be better than WHAT could happen. We are only one big volcano away from a catastrophe, that could easily take us petty humans out. I think we need to worry about volcanos more than fossil fuels creating CO2. Although in both cases, it is a waste of time to worry. Not much that we can, or will do in either case. The political atmosphere isn't conducive to any action upon global warming. And volcanos are immune to human interference. We are like fleas on a dog, who are trying to save the dogs life. Chances are, that won't happen.

It's really hard to imagine a more idiotic OP than this one.

I think it is idiotic NOT to consider volcanos. Are you a global warming afficionado? You ever study the role volcanos have played in the grand scheme of earth and climate change? Not that I have, or am an expert, but it seems we have more to fear from volcanos than global warming due to fossil fuels. Course, talking about volcanos, isn't as politically hot as talking about global warming, and HARD for anyone to make money from volcanos...or score points in politics.

I think global warming is highly over rated, and there are worse things that CAN happen that would make global warming look rather dull. The chances that all industrial nations will actually combat warming to any significant degree is pretty damn low. Fossil fuels drive all enonomies, therefore it will be damn near impossible to do anything about it, except to discuss what we should do. You may be supporting a lost cause, or jousting at windmills.

The OP was especially idiotic for two reasons:

1) It would take a Volcanic eruption larger than Pinatubo in 91 to have any short term mitigating effect on GW. That is on the order of 5000 tonnes a day of SO2 being emitted for a couple weeks. These volcanos are not on that magnitude, not even close.


2) The OP insinuates that there are no "honest" studies on the global dimming effects of SO2. This is an incredibly stupid accusation.

Some have attributed the little ice age to Volcanos. Others claim that they have contributed to the warming of the Earth we are now experiencing. In fact, volcanos are a bit player in affecting the global climate.

The Earth's climate has been affected throughout the millenia due to a number of different "forcings." Today the overwhelming force pushing on the climate is human-produced greenhouse gasses.

Not at all. Considering AGW is a hoax, volcanoes have a relatively big effect on global climate.

Not exactly. Volcanoes have had a huge impact on earth's climate all through the ages. When they are big and/or numerous enough they have an initial short therm global dimming effect (resulting in cooling and damage to crops and other vegetation) that last only a few years at most, and then over the long term they have a global warming effect due to the amount of CO2 they release.

Normally volcanoes have very little impact on the global climate due to their relative infrequence and low SO2/CO2 output. The mount Pinatubo eruption was enormous and did indeed have a cooling effect for a few years as well as a number of global effects. In that since your average volcanic eruption is indeed a bit player in the global climate.

Volcanoes effect on climate has to do with ash and sulfur. CO2 is a harmless gas. Stop trying to scare people into not breathing - except fellow alarmists.

We shouldn't be celebrating the impact of volcanoes one way or another as one way or another they are totally beyond our control and can f-up the environment even better then we do.
