The EU summit tonight was faster than anyone expected in delivering the news. Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy is the designated new President of the European Council, the institutionalized EU summits of the head of member states. He will not only set the agenda of the summits but also organize them and try to achieve consensus. He will also be the representative face internationally according to the Lisbon treaty.

The High Representative for foreign and defense affairs, better known as the EU "foreign minister" will be Catherine Ashton, currently the British EU Trade Commissioner. She will not only have a diplomatic corps of about 6000 diplomats at her disposal but be also part of the Commission as its Vice President. At the same time she will have strong ties to the Council as well. The catch to the office is that she can only act decisively if she manages to establish a common foreign policy position among the 27 member states.

The other top EU post has been already elected, actually reelected. The old and new Commission President will be Jose Manuel Barroso, he managed to get the support of both the Council and the newly elected European Parliament for a second term already some time ago.

What is still missing is how the new full Commission will look like. After the member states have appointed them, Barroso will distributes the resorts among them. Afterwards everyone of the designated Commissioner has to face the crossfire of a Parliamentary interview which tend to be pretty tough. The Parliament then can either confirm the new commission or vote it down as a whole (threatening doing so was enough last time to punch out a contender it disliked). This whole process will not be finished before January next year. By then the Lisbon treaty will be already in full force already for a while.

Isn't the EU an easily understandable and straight forward entity? ;)

Today's firestorm is around a picture of Sarah Palin on the cover of News Week magazine that was originally taken of Sarah Palin by Runners World magazine to promote physical fitness & health. Sarah Palin is an avid exerciser & runner. Runners World stated that they DID NOT give permission for News Week to use.

In my opinion it is tacky of News Week to do this, & I kind of doubt they would have used a picture of Hillary Clinton in shorts & tennis shoes & used it in the same manner they did Sarah Palin. Also note the commentary at the bottom of the cover.

Oddly enough--the liberal women on The View actually agree. Maybe--because some liberal women have finally realised this could easily happen to them.

If you didn't get to see the Palin interview on Oprah today--I thought it was great. Finally Palin goes after Katie Couric. Eventually referring to Couric as "perky"--LOL. She stated that Couric asked her 12 different times about her ideology on abortion out of the hours upon hours of the taped interview--which as we all know was editied.

She then stated that Couric showed the "gaffs" during their interview but Couric edited out all the gaffs that Joe Biden had made the week before.

Details of this interview plus some of the statements made by the McCain campaign people are in her new book: "Going Rogue"--In the below video she expresses her frustration with Couric & calls Couric--"the perky one."

I ordered her book "Going Rogue"--can't wait to read it.

Finally someone going after the "Lame steam media" in this country. The war has started--LOL.---:001_smile
WASHINGTON -- Self-proclaimed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other Guantanamo Bay detainees will be sent to New York to face trial in a civilian federal court, an Obama administration official said Friday.

Attorney General Eric Holder plans to announce the decision later in the morning.

President Obama, speaking in Tokyo, said he will insist that Mohammed be subject to "the most exacting demands of justice" and called the move both a prosecutorial and a national security decision.

Barack Obama makes his first trip to Asia as president this week, leaving behind a host of domestic problems with a visit that recognizes the region's economic and diplomatic importance to the United States. The trip, which starts on Thursday, will take Obama to an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Singapore.
But the critical leg will come in China, where Obama will have to navigate an increasingly complex relationship with the country that is the largest holder of U.S. foreign debt and its second-largest trading partner.
Mr. Obama regards China as a vital partner, as well as a competitor, the key is for both parties to make sure that that competition is friendly, and it's competition for customers and markets, it's within the bounds of well-defined international rules of the road that both China and the United States are party to, but also encouraging responsible behavior around the world.
From the beginning of his terms of president, Mr. Obama shows his friendship to China, We hope Obama’s visit will have an affirmative effect. What he has done is good for the US citizens to eliminate the bias to China, and more and more Americans will stop surpporting the splittism which was in China.

A 39-year-old military mental health doctor facing deployment overseas opened fire at the Fort Hood Army post Thursday, setting off a ramage that killed 12 people and left 31 wounded, AP reported. Authorities identified the suspected gunman as Major Nidal Malik Hasan, there was no official word on motive. Authorities first said they had killed the suspected shooter, but later said that he was alive and in stabel condition at a hospital.
How do you think of the inccident happened in US? Does it mean that the US government should control the possession of weapon? And these tragedy seldom happen in other countries such as in China just because the Chinese government has done an effective way of controlling the possession of weapon. People living China feel safer than living in other countries, which is a great achievement.
