Post United Nations Day - October 24

I had no idea this was even a holiday. I glanced at my calendar and saw it printed. Did anyone know? I don't recall this ever being celebrated in school or even discussed. How do we celebrate UN Day? I wonder what President Bush will say in his voluntary proclamation.

United Nations Day
United Nations Day is celebrated internationally on 24 October for the purpose of informing the people of the world as to the aims, goals, and achievements of the UN.

It commemorates the coming into being of the United Nations Organization on that day in 1945 when the UN Charter was ratified by all permanent members of the security council and more than half of the signatories. The day is part of the United Nations Week, October 20-26; it was declared in U.N. Resolution 168 (II), on 31 October 1947.

On 6 December 1971, U.N. Resolution 2782 (XXVI) recommended that United Nations day be made a national holiday in all member countries. [1]

Several international schools also celebrate the diversity of their student body on United Nations Day (although the event is not necessarily celebrated on 24 October). Celebrations often include a show of cultural performances in the evening and a food fair, where food is available from all over the world.

United Nations Day is celebrated in many schools in various countries.
  • In Costa Rica it is a national holiday.
  • In Denmark, Finland and Sweden, it is a flag day.
  • The President of the United States voluntarily issues a proclamation.

LOL My calendar doesn't list it! I think we should celebrate it the same way we celebrate April Fool's Day.

Yea, my calendar doesn't list it, either. Which is odd, because it lists a lot of other stuff (such as yesterday being Labour Day in New Zealand)...

Ah, well, more reasons to have an extra beer doesn't hurt.

hmmm, my calendar doesn't say anything about yesterday being Labour Day in New Zealand, but it did say yesterday was Eid al-Fitr (end of Ramadan).

Well, my calendar is "365 Reasons to hate Ramadan and love New Zealand", so I guess I'm not totally surprised. Got it from the bargain bin.

Was it a free gift with a purchase of your favorite 12-pack, Marlboro Miles, or what? How do you get a calendar like that?

I got it from the bargain bin at Mazel Tov Books. I'm not Jewish, nor do I believe in "books", but they have great prices.

The calendar itself (3rd edition) isn't bad. I don't really agree with it, but it's got some interesting facts that make you think. Such as:

Quote:
April 23rd: "Ramadan" has 7 letters, while "New Zealand" has 10 letters. Looks like you come up short again, Ramadan. Or should I say, "Loser-dan"!
Quote:
June 8th: Peter Jackson doesn't observe Ramadan. However, Peter Jackson was born in New Zealand. And Peter Jackson directed the Lord Of The Rings movies, so New Zealand wins.
Quote:
September 14th: New Zealand is right by beautiful Australia. There are no countries remotely close to Australia that observe Ramadan. Don't look it up, just trust us on this one.
Quote:
October 3rd: You can't eat during Ramadan. You can eat whenever you want in New Zealand. That should be enough to convince you right there.

Speakeasy stop. You've already won funniest poster.

Today is also, apparently, "Hug Day".

I'm going to go find a diplomat to hug, as a happy compromise.

Or maybe I'll go bungle a mediation between to people who are fighting, then skim some candy off the top and hug my neighbor.

If it's a paid holiday .. sure ... and then that would be the only thing I'd like about the United Nations. Yeah UN ... another paid holiday so I can sit around in my pjs on the couch and eat bon-bons!

To celebrate UN day, I will make strongly-worded proclamations against North Korea.

So you can be thankful for France too.
