Defense Dept. warns about Canadian spy coins

U.S. warns about Canadian spy coins
Tiny transmitters found on contractors with classified security clearances
The Associated Press
Updated: 5:45 a.m. ET Jan 11, 2007

WASHINGTON - Money talks, but can it also follow your movements?

In a U.S. government warning high on the creepiness scale, the Defense Department cautioned its American contractors over what it described as a new espionage threat: Canadian coins with tiny radio frequency transmitters hidden inside.

The government said the mysterious coins were found planted on U.S. contractors with classified security clearances on at least three separate occasions between October 2005 and January 2006 as the contractors traveled through Canada.

Intelligence and technology experts said such transmitters, if they exist, could be used to surreptitiously track the movements of people carrying the spy coins.

The U.S. report doesn’t suggest who might be tracking American defense contractors or why. It also doesn’t describe how the Pentagon discovered the ruse, how the transmitters might function or even which Canadian currency contained them.

Further details were secret, according to the U.S. Defense Security Service, which issued the warning to the Pentagon’s classified contractors. The government insists the incidents happened, and the risk was genuine.

“What’s in the report is true,” said Martha Deutscher, a spokeswoman for the security service. “This is indeed a sanitized version, which leaves a lot of questions.”

China, Russia or even France — all said to actively run espionage operations inside Canada with enough sophistication to produce such technology.
Canada must be pretty relaxed to let it happen.

Hey, all it takes is one stop at a 7-11 or a McDonald's, and the game is up...

Re: Defense Dept. warns about Canadian spy coins

In all seriousness, this is pretty silly.

In Canada, they use coins for one and two dollars. Think about how quickly currency can change hands. I travel to Canada a lot, and can tell you that if those coins have transmitters in them, then someone's going to be tracking down a Tim Horton's coffee shop in pretty short order.

If they're putting transmitters in quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, well, those just end up sitting on the desk in my hotel room for the duration of my stay. The only thing someone's going to be able to do is track me back to San Diego, and then they'll be able to track the jar that sits on mt dresser, provided I don't try to spend as much of that money as I can before leaving the Toronto airport...

It is a joke! The story was retracted....canoe -- CNEWS: - Retraction after Cdn coin rumour

Don't worry, Canadians are used to this kind of crap eminating from the woefully uninformed US media and government. I think we should put up a wall - wait a minute, isn't that what the US has already proposed???!!!

...and ProUSA...wasn't your country pretty relaxed about letting in the 9/11 terrorists? Your government granted them student visas after all. That's no joke at all. They certainly didn't enter from Canada, another story full of crap but unfortunately widely believed to this day in the US.

It isn't a joke; the article says that the defense agency is sticking to the story. Perhaps to save face, perhaps in truth - we don't know.

It is a curious story, though. The coins were planted on the contractors, possibly by any espionage agency, so it may be that the individuals did not even know they had the change for quite a while. Perhaps it was just an experimental operation, if it indeed happened; that they were allegedly placed upon defense contractors though suggests otherwise.

I always wondered how I ended up with them Canadian quarters when I dig in my pockets at the coke machine. Must have been planted there by a spy.

Defense Security Service Report Statement on Canadian Coins Incorrect, 01/12/2007

A statement in the 2006 Defense Security Service Technology Collection Trends in the U.S. Defense Industry report which claimed radio frequency transmitters were discovered embedded in Canadian coins is not true, according to DSS officials.

This statement was based on a report provided to DSS. The allegations, however, were found later to be unsubstantiated following an investigation into the matter.

According to DSS officials, the 2006 annual report should not have contained this information. The acting director of the DSS directed an internal review of the circumstances leading up to the publication of this information to prevent incidents like this from reoccurring.

The 2006 DSS Technology Collection Trends in the U.S. Defense Industry report was published by DSS in June 2006. As part of its oversight responsibilities under the National Industrial Security Program, the DSS receives reports from U.S. cleared defense industry to enhance overall security awareness in cleared industry.

Yes but if you decided to do it it would save us money and we could finish the one on our southern border. Great idea put a a wall to keep out the media.
