Yeah... I'm sure that's exactly what they were going to do...

All sarcasm and joking aside, I'm glad you were able to deal with that situation as you did.

Thats probably why they carried knives - because they wanted to make some sandwiches for the party.

I don't believe that I have ever said you shouldn't be allowed, even though you actually aren't. I only questioned if you had the right temper with that spitting example, but we have already been through that.

If four armed men approached you and your wife/husband, and you had a firearm, and it was readily evident what was about to happen, what would you do?

It is a frightening thought that any low intellect psychotic is able to carry a gun and shoot innocent people in "self-defence" should he feel like it.
More dangerous than a gun-wielding criminal.

It isn't a choice here. It is not possible to carry a gun, it's illegal. Even the police don't carry them.
There are armed squads, but guns are not routinely carried. The only place you're likely to see them is at airports and that has only arisen recently because of the terrorist threat.

Others do not have to make the same choice you do, and you have no right to tell them they cannot.
Nor would I wish to. I have no inadequacy requiring me to bully other people. Don't know where you spring that from.

Thats the biggest difference between people like me and people like you. I don't give a damn if you're armed or not. You want to make sure that I'm not.
I do think people who are unbalanced are a danger without arms, far less with them.
But that is your culture, or so you would have me believe. I note, however, that the vote above does not agree with you. It indicates your view is the minority.

I was raised in a very violent American city, and like many others, adopted this point of view:

Its better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have it.

I can assure you that in this country, day, and age, having a gun handy is an asset. I'm sure that you won't agree and probably cling to your theory on the dangers of the mentally "not quite right" having guns, but living here, I can assure you that the vast majority of armed crime is carried out by the criminal mind, not your common borderline neurotic.

That's complete idiocy.

Do you honestly believe that someone who carries a gun wants to "bully" people?

I've carried a concealed weapon for over 20 years. I've used it once.

Please, do the math on that, and tell me how that equates to "bullying"...

A question that i would like to pose to you is this: who has the right to tell a person when the use of force is appropriate to save their own life, or the lives of their loved ones? Please explain to us what gives any government, politician, or lawmaker the right to make this determination?

Ted Nugent makes an excellent case of it here:

I the police aren't carrying guns, they're little more than security guards...

The will of the people gives them the right. Nobody here is interested in changing the law.

In your situation, ok. If it's that violent I accept you must defend yourself.

It's not a theory though. I have lived in both cultures and felt safer here. Not felt safer, it is safer despite the figures people have drawn on about violence, for normal people those are not accurate".

That "mentally not right" thing was not directed at you btw. But it is a little relevant...

When I lived in the US, my dad came home from work to tell me some colleague of his had gone off on one, threatened his manager with a gun and was arrested. They searched his car, he had 7 guns in it and apparently had some plan to shoot the place up.

Now people here are very nice but they can also be notoriously volatile, indeed I watched a comedian on tv recently portray it very well. He was discussing Gordon Brown (British Prime Minister and a Scot, as Tony Blair also was a Scot before him) and he did a sketch about how he imagines Brown's style of debate would be. He thought Brown would be very polite until pushed too far and then he'd...well the guy says inside every pleasant, self-effacing Scot lurks a "wee nutter" who will come out and punch your face in when he feels threatened. This was pretty funny as I have seen it many times and can imagine Brown with the Saudi minister....

So anyway...the nutters exist here and they crack up and threaten their bosses, but it's easier to defend against if they don't have a gun.
