Well, I don't routinely skin deer. As a matter of fact, I can't say I've ever skinned anything, except maybe my knees and elbows.

Bah. More deadly than a gun? A club?

Easily as deadly. If you've never seen what someone who is proficient with a knife as a weapon is capable of doing, consider yourself fortunate.

Stupid in what sense? it is their job to arrest people, not kill them, if at all possible. Sometimes they have to, but then that's usually considered a failure.

No, you don't seem extremely irrational to me, Steve. However, sane people often have irrational views about some topics.

Well, yes, presumably, but a rational person would not necessarily assume that they were willing to die in order to do so.

I'm sure. Makes me wonder why the military bother with firearms at all. They'd look so much cooler wielding swords and pikes.

How, then, would you consider them sane?

With the introduction of a weapon (a knife or a pipe, let's say), they've upped the ante. If I draw a gun in response, then how the situation progresses from there is entirely up to them...

Fail to see what that has to do with anything, unless you foolishly believe I am a hunter. I've never hunted a thing in my life, let alone skinned anything.

Actually my friend - yes. At 20 feet, a man with a knife is as deadly, if not deadlier, than a man with a gun. That's what we're all trying to tell you - and to teach you.

I would disagree with that...

I've nothing against hunters in any case, though I fail to see what a 4" knife can be good for.

Well, I'm willing to learn. But I have absolutely no reason to take your word on that. Steve's experience, for instance, makes it clear that a gun is seriously more deadly than a knife.

Research the "tueller drill".

Eek...Nasty cuts, I'm duly horrified. But then that's another situation entirely, isn't it? We weren't discussing whether Steve was right to draw his weapon, at least I wasn't. How many rounds can you put through a target while it covers 20 feet? I'm guessing a shitload.

Matt's link on the Tueller drill might make you reconsider.

20' or less with a knife and whether you have a gun or not, you're getting cut - bad.

I see you didn't bother to read the link.

Try zero for most people, a couple at best.

I read the link. The drill is, you have to draw and shoot the target before it can cover 20 feet. Steve already had his gun dawn. Considering the emphasis he has placed in this thread on stopping the target, I assume it can be done.

Alright, just to dispel the misunderstanding, here goes:

A man with a knife in his hand can cover 20 feet in less than a second. People who train heavily with handguns routinely have to work very hard indeed to be able to draw and fire a handgun in under a second. Do the math.

I had a chum who was a marine medic. He trained all the time, a couple of times a week, specifically trying to drop the time it took him to draw and fire his pistol. The last time I talked to him, he was down to .78 seconds, consistently hitting his target.

So, if a man is 20 feet from you and your weapon is holstered, there is a strong possibility that you are going to get cut, and even cut badly. Whether or not you make him pay in kind is moot at that point, as the idea is to stop your assailant before you and your loved ones are harmed, correct?

Now, if your weapon is in your hand and the assailant is 20 feet away, that's another story. But who walks around with a gun in their hand?
