Obama wants national ban on concealed carry

Quote:
Barack Obama
Supports extending the assault weapons ban. Supports national law against carrying concealed weapons, with exceptions for retired police and military personnel. Supports limiting gun sales to one per month.

Gun control: Election Center 2008 - CNN.com
Well, Obama has absolutely guaranteed he won't get my support.

Leaving aside the whole gun hysteria for a moment, this is plainly something that is in the purview of the individual states.

Re: Obama wants national ban on concealed carry

Interestingly, although CNN attributes several gun control positions to Obama, Obama's own website is silent on the issue.

I sent them an email asking if the CNN report is an accurate depiction of Obama's position. I'll share any response I get.

Matt, please cut-n-paste the reply (if you get one) from the Obama camp.

Re: Obama wants national ban on concealed carry

According to CBS news here is Obama's record on crime and gun control:

Quote:
Voted against letting people argue self-defense in court if charged with violating local weapons bans by using a gun in their home. (2004)

Voted to let retired police and military police carry concealed weapons. (2004)

Successfully sponsored requirement that law enforcement videotape interrogations of suspects in some serious crimes. (2003)

Successfully sponsored law enforcement study of the race of people pulled over for traffic tickets. (2003)

Helped pass an overhaul of the state's troubled death penalty system. (2003)

Unsuccessfully sponsored measure to expunge some criminal records and create an employment grant program for ex-criminals. (2002)

Unsuccessfully sponsored limit of one handgun purchase per month. (2000)

Voted against making gang members eligible for the death penalty if they kill someone to help their gang. (2001

I didn't find anything on revoking concealed carry rights, but I plan to dig a little more.

Re: Obama wants national ban on concealed carry

I did find this in the Chicago Tribune relating to his 2004 Senate race:

Quote:
. . . In a February survey of Democratic primary candidates for the U.S. Senate by the Tribune, Obama said he opposed allowing ordinary citizens to carry concealed weapons and that a federal law banning concealed carried weapons except for law enforcement is needed. . . .
Keyes backs law on concealed guns -- chicagotribune.com

I'm never an one issue man, so one issue alone won't preclude any candidate for me. However, this is a negative in his column for me in the pro/con analysis I do with all candidates come voting time. If it's accurate, he'd be well advised to reconsider it not only for his campaign but even on its rationale and also its ability to be accomplished. Platforms require taking a road in the forks, but this one is a position that has no real payoff for the liabilities he will incur with the position.

Re: Obama wants national ban on concealed carry

This sounds like just another vote-getting talking point. Obama MUST know this would be totally unenforceable, especially considering the people who carry most of them now are criminals to begin with.

I figure this would be one more feelgood law which will be ignored by the people who don't seem to have much of a problem with breaking the existing laws anyway.

I dug a little, and found this, this, and this.

Holy crap, not only does CNN say he would prohibit concealed carry nationwide, but he wants to ban the sale of all semi-automatic firearms. Crazy.

I have to assume that he must figure that either I shouldn't have the right to protect my life, or I'm too much of a klutz to do so with a firearm.
Oh, I know..........call the police, they'll be there in a flash.

Re: Obama wants national ban on concealed carry

I got the following non-answer from Obama's campaign:

Quote:
Dear Friend,

Thank you for contacting me about gun laws and the Second Amendment. I
appreciate hearing from you on this important issue. Americans broadly
agree that guns must be kept from those who may pose a threat, and that the
rights of legitimate hunters and sportsmen should be protected.

We must work to ensure that guns do not fall into the hands of criminals or
the mentally ill through an effective background check system. We also have
to strike a reasonable balance between public safety and sportsmen's rights.

I will continue to work for effective gun laws, including reinstatement of
the assault weapons ban that the last Congress allowed to expire, and
effective law enforcement. I will also speak out against the culture of
violence that traps so many of our young people.

Thank you again for contacting me on this important issue.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama
I was quite specific when I asked about the proposed ban on CCW as reported by CNN.

I presume by the unresponsive answer that the campaign prefers to avoid the question.

Matt

Yeah, slowing down the firing rate is the answer. Revolvers aren't nearly as deadly...........
