Purchasing a handgun - not so hard!

So, I purchased my second firearm today; a Smith & Wesson M&P45. Entire process, from walking in the door to walking out with pistol, ammo, and cleaning kit, was less than 30 minutes. Honestly, it's a little scary how easy that was. I filled out a form, they checked me in their computer system, and I was done.

I thought that there was supposed to be a waiting period for pistols, but apparently that's not an issue in CO.

As a liberal, I'm not sure how I feel about how easy it was. However, I do look forward to taking it to the range and seeing how it shoots.

Did you go with the black or the brown?

Re: Purchasing a handgun - not so hard!

Excellent choice - the M&Ps are very good pistols. In fact, the pistol I most often carry is a M&P compact in 9mm.

I didn't know there was no waiting period for handguns in CO. Interesting. It seems your state gets a "D" from the Brady Bunch: http://www.bradycampaign.org/legisla...tate.php?st=co

(In Florida, we got an F. I consider it a badge of honor)

Too bad you're half way across the country - we could go punch some paper and swap EMS war stories.

Re: Purchasing a handgun - not so hard!

I think almost all of the waiting periods went away after the federal waiting period sunsetted with the implementation of the NICS.

I'm looking at the Desert Eagle in 44mg as my next pistol.
I always wanted one, to add to my collection.

You're not going for the .50 AE? I was looking at one once, I could stick my little finger into that barrel. I can only imagine what I could stick into the barrel of a .500 S&W Mag.

I went with the black. Took me a little while to figure out how to take it apart, but now it's all clean and ready to go. Just need to wait for my buddy to get a day off from work.

You never know; I've been thinking about doing a road trip between graduation and starting a job.

Good call.

The brown looks a tad cheesy to me...

I think it's not so different from over here. Police did an investigation where they sent out 14 year old boys to buy guns (which is not allowed). In 1 out of 4 shops they could get a handgun without showing identification or filling in anything.

I guess I missed the part where he said he didn't have to fill out anything...

Actually that's very different. Every gun dealer here checks the identity of the customer and runs his name thru the NICS to make sure the purchase is legal. Many transactions are denied due to mistaken identity; the customer has the same name as someone on the NICS list.

I havent purchased a new handgun in a few years, but AK never really had the waiting period issue after 97 or something like that. All of the firearms I have purchased new, the transaction was done in less than 30minutes.

I have shot both the half inchers in question. The AE, by its nature is much more pleasant to shoot than the 500. I managed to empty a cylinder on some water filled jugs, making for a good show from 40 yards. The notion of shooting up a box of 50 in an afternoon would cause some wrist issues afterwards.

We got an F+, whatever that means. The Brady jackasses have no hold, here. The last time I bought a gun was a Kimber 1911 last year. Idaho treats their CCW holders well, because if you have a CCW license in Idaho, gun dealers are not required to check through NICS for gun purchases.

I purchased my Kimber (one of two, labeled "his" and "hers"), the .22 LR conversion kit, and a pancake holster in less than five minutes. The only thing that slowed me down was the fact that I was shopping with two young (3 years old and 10 months) children. And I could do the same tomorrow.
