Pentagon Bans Google Maps

It was bound to happen, Google filmed detailed maps of military installations and placed them as "street view" maps, very detailed.

This seems highly suspect to me, what possible reason would Google have to film these installations and put them out for anyone to see?

When has this technology gone too far?

I took a look at Fort Carson CO a few months back, was able to locate my old barracks from 1981, could even see my old room window

From what the article reported, nothing suspicious was afoot, just some people not thinking more deeply on a certain occasion. Google does not desire to film bases in detail and they also remove images the military desires clouded or removed. Google sends out personnel with cameras on their car, probably a huge load of people all over the place. One small crew (maybe just the google car operators) hired to film their area using the camera car requested to film a base within it as part of filming his area. The military personnel at the base allowed him. Once the pictures were posted, someone in the military elsewhere picked up that the google filmer and the base weren't using their heads about the possible repurcussions, requested google to remove the material and it did. Both google and the military agree this should not be done.

By suspect I actually didn't mean google as a company, but some idiot they employ going too far, as for the military personnel that allowed it...I imagine he is still cleaning toilets with his/her tooth brush!

The Pentagon has no authority to ban anything.

Googlemaps is still quite available.

This reporter is an idiot. (i know, thats repetitive).

Re: Pentagon Bans Google Maps

I just think it's funny that the government/military wants everyone to pretend that bases and things simply do not exist.

Nope, no base here! Just a big blank spot! These aren't the droids you are looking for. Move along!

you misunderstand the original post. Goolge is not being banned. The Pentagon is simply banning them from shooting military bases.

That is not the purpose of this ban.

I understood it perfectly - the reporter didn't choose his words appropriately.

How so? The reporter spelled it out quite simply

Quote:
The US defence department has banned the giant internet search engine Google from filming inside and making detailed studies of US military bases.

Sure it is. They seem to think that it constitutes some sort of "security threat". (Which, I guess is their job to think everything is going to kill us all.)

Just strikes me as funny, that's all. I think Google should fill the blank spaces on the maps in with elephants and sea monsters....

The purpose of this ban is no to, as you said, "pretend that bases and things simply do not exist". They aren't doing this so they can say Camp Pendleton, for instance, isn't there.

Hehe, yeah, I wouldn't want to be the personnel who allowed the google crew to film the base.

Yesssss I'm certain I once read that somewhere. . . . We're gonna train the lad. . . . Jon, that's all. Why don't you and I have lunch at the "O" club, we'll talk about the training of young William."

Re: Pentagon Bans Google Maps

its easy to figure out security weakenss and soft points of entry with an overhead view. i
I think its common sense to ban over head views of a base.

Just put a big glob of crap that says Terrorst free zone .

problem solved
