DC Gun ban goes to SC Tuesday

The argument over the DC Gun Ban starts Tuesday before the Supreme Court.
This is the first time the SC has had to rule on what exactly the 2nd Amendment means.
All kinds of possibilities manifest themselves around this case. The court might decide there is no personal right to bar arms, or it might decide that there is a right to bear arms but it's limited and the Ban is legal. Or something in between.

this may point to what kind of court we can expect till the next vacancy.

If they punt it, its still in limbo...

I'll be brave and take a wild guess- they come down with the "people"...

Re: DC Gun ban goes to SC Tuesday

Still, given the thousands of posts this topic has generated, an actual SC ruling will be an interesting addition to the discussion.

There is a theory, that no matter what a potential SC justice has expressed over a lifetime, when they become a justice of the SC, they are immediately immersed in a social circle that is predominantly liberal. After all if you are a SC justice you are far more likely to have lunch with Dean of Harvard Law School than with the Dean of the East Podunk Christian Academy of Law. And we are all concerned with what our peers think of us, so the pressure to "rise to fill the robes" becomes huge, and the more prestigious an institution is, the more likely that Liberals will fill the top spots.
So while the meat and potatoes Republicans may look at a court where the 7 of the 9 justices were appointed by presidents who described themselves as conservative, and think all gun laws are about to be stricken from the books, there is a good chance that gun bans will be strengthened.

Anyway the big difference between this and the hundreds of other threads on the this topic is that this thread will have a definite answer within a relatively short time.

I've discussed this case in two of my classes thus far and it is the one case I am most anticipating reading about once it is decided. I'm practically giddy with the potential this has for being a monumental case.

Plus, it could end the annoying strife between the left and the right on the issue of gun control.

The idea of this terrifies me. If the SC upholds the DC ban, I expect bad things to happen.

Not yet, going to be this Fall though.

I discussed the case in a Law & Society class and a political science seminar on the Supreme Court, the latter of which I am currently taking.

Re: DC Gun ban goes to SC Tuesday

It will be interesting to see what the Court says.

I suspect we'll get a very narrowly crafted ruling which is so specific to the DC matter as to make it moot with respect to the larger issue of individual versus collective right.

I gotta agree with you buddy.

Banning guns just wont make guns go away. Banning guns would just be an insult to the Constitution.

Hell if they made guns go away welfare trash in DC would just do drive by stabbings instead.

Why are the leftists always trying to ban something? If the leftists had their way they would ban democracy.

Re: DC Gun ban goes to SC Tuesday

Of course one interesting aspect is that the Justices live near and work in the city of Washington DC, so the thought of driving to work through a "right to carry concealed weapons area" may just influence their votes a tad.

I doubt it considering they are protected by the Supreme Court Police. All high up government officials live lives characterized by a complete separation from everyone else.

DC in its self could ban guns and the rest of VA would be exempt of that.

Whats the county name of DC?
