Saudi Arabia grants licences to private gun shops

Quote:

Riyadh & Manama Saudi security experts said yesterday the new decision to grant licences to private gun shops for the sale of personal firearms is part of the recent steps to rein in the widespread illegal ownership of handguns and assault weapons from unknown sources.

"The security authorities are keen to put an end to the practice of possessing personal weapons in an illegal manner," Dr Muneef Al Qahtani from the Security Sciences College of Riyadh told Gulf News.

The decision was greeted with mixed reaction from citizens.

"Allowing people to buy guns will help eliminate many societal ills. Now people with criminal intent will think much more carefully before they do anything evil," blogger ‘Desert Liberal' posted on the internet.

Others were more wary of the news.

"Weapons may fall in the hands of young people who in fact need anger management courses. We might have a real social crisis because of widespread sale of weapons," a woman identifying herself as Hanan wrote.

In Bahrain and Kuwait, where the possession of weapons is banned, several people have said that they would strongly be against allowing people to have guns.

Came across this article and thought it's interesting that Saudi Arabia is moving towards establishing forms of legal gun ownership/purchases, while in the West a general reverse movement is taking place ( making it more difficult to legally buy and own weapons).

Sure they do it to control the flow of weapons more effectively, but still isn't it a move towards more freedom, that ordinary citizens now can legaly buy their guns?

You may want to define "West" more clearly.

In most of the United States, a general movement is taking place to make it far easier to obtain and carry weapons.

Personally I think what Saudi Arabia is doing is a GOOD thing. Not often an absolute monarchy makes it easier for the people to be armed.

Re: Saudi Arabia grants licences to private gun shops

You know EricOKC, in general I'm not into gun ownership topics, so I've just taken the usual media fuzz about some Americans fearing the Dems to limit their acess to weapons as granted and haven't studied the developments in all the different US-sates closely (shame on me)

So given that we have ever more restricted rules in Europe and offically a fear of it in the USA; I, of course, meant "us" (Europe + the USA) to make up the west.

Anyway so thanks for the info, that this general trend is not true for all states.

Well I have to agree with you, it's a sign of confidence/ (+ reform) by the Sauds to establish legal terms for gun ownership and it offers further legal security for ordinary Saudi citizens.

It's good that those who wish to protect themselves and their family can do so legally, without having to fear being prosecuted for owning the means necessary for it.

Who knows, maybe in the year 2090 Saudi Arabia will finally end up in the 20'th century, when it comes to its citizens freedoms and rights.

To be fair, Saudi is pretty good when it comes to freedoms, especially when you remember that it is one of the few absolute monarchies remaining in the world.

I hope their teaching these new owners not to shoot straight up into the air.

What movement is this? Sorry but I'm not clued in or anything! If you could point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Myth Busters had a great segment of that very subject. It turns out if you're going to shoot into the air, straight up is the safest way to do it.
