This is getting pretty disgusting. The White House pressured insurance execs to come answer to them as to why they are raising premiums, and only televised the parts they liked. The show even included the President stopping by to read one of his sad letters.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius called five insurance company executives, including the heads of UnitedHealth Group Inc. and WellPoint Inc., to the Roosevelt Room to request explanation on the recent rate increases.

Mr. Obama dropped by and read them a letter from a 50-year-old cancer survivor from Ohio whose premiums rose 40% this year. He told the group that such rate increases are "unjustifiable," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said.

The total gross weight of what Obama does not know amazes me almost every day.

Why is it not fair to raise a cancer victim's insurance premium? Insurance is to protect you from financial loss, not to fund the consequences of your life style. Premiums are based on the risk the company faces based on factors such as age, life style and pre-existing conditions.
Should a smoker and heavy drinker of 70, who is 5'6" tall and weighs 350 pounds pay the same rates for health insurance as a man of 21, 6'/ 180 pounds in perfect health? Should a man with 3 speeding and 7 DWI convictions pay the same auto insurance rates as a 40 year old family man with a clear driving record? You can't blame a corporation for trying to show a profit. That's their sole purpose.
I'm 60. I smoke a pack a day and ride a motorcycle. Why the hell should I enjoy the same premium as a younger man with a healthier life style. I am willing to pay for my choices. It's called personal responsibility.
If I were these insurance executives I'd be damned if I'd respond to obama's command performance. As far as I know, the executive branch has no subpoena powers and I'd be damned if I would show up so the asshole at 1600 could vilify me for doing my job.

And of course they can always stop paying the insurance if they dont like it.

well said...as I stated in another thread, when I read the transcript of the 'summit' and he went into a song and dance as to how he was refused payments to repair a car he didn't have comprehensive insurance on, I was awestruck, any car insurance apology no matter how made, is way off base to start with fundamentally.



He understands nothing. He sowed the seeds of disaster for HC when he farmed out the creation of the bill to congress not simply because hes an ideologue and nancy and harry are too, but because he doesn't have clue as to how to legislate a bill nor what the details would be and where or are....

He doesn't have any idea what this bill will do, nor does he apparently care to educate himself. Hes all show. A wind up toy.Its all about the 'win' now, hes wants a self aggrandizing legacy and screw anyone who stands in his way.

The insurance companies don't have to justify anything to the White House or the Congress and if I were an insurance company executive, after the way the majority party had been constantly demonizing my industry, I'd have told them to go stick it up their ass when they called.

obama is going to be in St Charles MO on Wdenesday 3/10/10. The secret sevice has been all over St Charles High School today and yesterday. They have approved the location.

We need to stop this dictator of a president form so willfully disobeying the people that he works for. He knows that we as free citizens are against the current health care bill nearly 2 to 1, yet he continues to make backroom payouts and twists arms of democratic congressman to throw themselves under the bus so that his non-constitutional agenda to take over 18% of our economy and put into place structure that will help him further his cause for socialism. This must be stopped or at least we go out screaming as a last ditch effort to prove our republic can work. God help us if it does not.

I would love to see 15,000 plus show up in protest so that we can lay down in the streets and totally stop him from appearing. St Charles is a very conservative community with a GOP mayor, mostly GOP judicial system and conservative police dept. This is our chance to really make him see what is so obvious to all of us that this health care proposal will not be accepted by the public and that he works for us the public. Anyone here familiar with the story of "Br're rabbit" and the brier patch? I watched some of this hearing, and at one point, Burgess of Texas is scolding an insurance company rep explaining the rate increases:

You had to know this was going to be trouble. A 39% rate increase, in this climate? Do you know what we've been doing up here the last year? Do you know what's happening at the White House tomorrow? You knew this was going to be trouble .... Did you make a judgement as to whether or not this was the best time to do this?"

Well, of course they did. If they really wanted to pull this off, they'd have laid low, hoping reform would fail, and then try to raise the premiums later when things quiet down. This was grandstanding with the deliberate purpose of goading congress into passing health care reform. The insurance industry wants this bill to pass. They wrote most of it. The complaining and massive lobbying effort isn't an attempt to stop health care reform, but merely to control it - which they are succeeding at masterfully.

None of the executives summed to the White House should ever agree to go unless this administration permits them to bring their own camera crews so that a full and complete record for the public, unfiltered by the WH, can be preserved.

Nah. Conservatives schedule their own protests. They're called Tea Parties. Let Obama have his dog and pony shows. Besides; I have to work. i have four more months to work to pay Uncle Sam his cut before I get to start working for me. No time for lying in the street.
