This country was guaranteed a permanent doctor shortage the day the AMA was granted the right to determine the number of people allowed to go to medical school and the number of residencies hospitals are allowed to offer. Real health care reform (which no politician will ever propose) would have addressed this issue.

Right. The AMA is the strongest lobby in Washington. The AMA is a doctor's union and not a patient's union. They are looking out for MDs and not for you and me.

There is no justification for health care in America to be 37th world wide, nor is there any justification for there being 40 million Americans uninsured. Doing away with the public option was the work of the AMA and was NOT in the interest of those who need health care coverage.

    The AMA isn't a union.

Yes it is. And calling it otherwise is nothing but semantics.

How does the AMA work as a union?

The same way the NEA does.

I wish those in power would realize the best thing they could do is to open the medical schools up. There area a lot of people who want to be doctors but cannot get into a medical school even though they are academically prepared.

People simply will not look at where the problem is.
Im pretty sure they anyone prepared can get into medical school. But they cant pay for it. Education isnt free. Of course if they can pay for it, they should get in. I realize there are federal caps on residencies, but is there evidence of federal or AMA limitations on college training?

No, there are limits placed on the number of medical school enrollments.

Cost is not what keeps people out of medical school. In some cases medical school IS completely free. My nephew got a full scholarship for his medical education. No one who could not raise the funds to go to school should embark on a premed course of study.

I am completely amazed at the number of people who see doctors as the victims in this little drama. They are not, never have been, and never will be.

Sorry, I added some comments while you were quoting. I do see doctors as the victim, because in the end they are free individuals, and most of their work is controlled by the govt or some other entity. They provide an extremely vauleable service, and are demonized for getting paid for it.

But back to the facts, WHO limits medical school enrollments?

The AMA limits medical school enrollments.

Doctors are not victims. They are pissed because they see their lavish lifestyle slipping. And from where did the comment about their being controlled by the government come? IMO they are out of control and have been for some years now.

I am unable to find any evidence the AMA has any power to limit medical school enrollment. Care to share your sources?

They do have a certain role in determining capacity. Start here.
