It costs nowhere near $12,000 to reattach a finger. I can't find a source with the exact cost, but if you see any example of someone who lost a finger and had to have it reattached without insurance, the cost after all expenses is usually $900-1000. Never have I heard or seen a case of a $12,000 finger. Also, his choice to lose his finger was his. They couldn't deny him regardless. He CHOSE to lose it, if this even happened. There were some terrifying examples of people who was denied nessecary care because they could not afford a health insurance. A guy got his fingers cut off by accident, and got the choise of either paying $12.000 just to get one finger sewed back on, or loose it permanently - he chose the latter. Are you saying that it was all made up for the movie?
Furthermore, if he could not afford the cost, they would HAVE to work with him, to make sure he could afford it. There are plenty of things in place to ensure he gets that care. The EMTALA covers a lot of this. There are other resources that I don't honestly have the drive to look up at the time.
