    This can't possibly end well..

Scientists rewrite rules of human reproduction

The first human egg cells that have been grown entirely in the laboratory from stem cells could be fertilised later this year in a development that will revolutionise fertility treatment and might even lead to a reversal of the menopause in older women.
The scientists want to fertilise the laboratory-grown egg cells with human sperm to prove that they are viable. Any resulting embryos will be studied for up to 14 days - the legal limit - to see if they are normal.

These early embryos will not be transplanted into a woman's womb because they will be deemed experimental material, but will either be frozen or allowed to perish.
Generating an unlimited supply of human eggs and the prospect of reversing the menopause was made possible by a series of breakthroughs led by Professor Jonathan Tilly of Harvard.
    (emphasis mine)

    This is just plain scary.

"unlimited supply of human eggs.."....for what!!!???

Y'all going to start breeding test tube humans just to experiment on them? FFS.....anybody remember Joe Mengele?

This is not good. Not by a long shot. This is heading into territory that we just plain do not need to be exploring. Nature works the way it does for some really good reasons and this.....this is more than a little tweak to the system.

More crazy shat! I gotta agree with you here ... this is way overboard. I'm sure there are an unlimited number of ways this can be used and abused.

lol, that is a first being called a righty. I'd say my stand is more about a lack of trust in government / man to not abuse such knowledge.

I wonder if we'll eventually have things like the movie The Island or Never Let Me Go.

Yeh, yeh, right...in vitro fertilisation was called 'against nature' in the 50s and Rick Santorum still believes we should outlaw sonograms....also, man was not made to fly, people can't breathe at the breakneck speed of 30 mph and doctors who try to aid amputations with these newfangled anesthetics should be burned as witches, the Bible says life is painful, who are we to thwart God's Will?

Also, doesn't Godwin's Law apply to mention of Mengele too?

Tell ya what, next time you get sick go let out about a couple pints of blood to drain the bad humers. If you don't feel better, bleed away two more and call me in the morning

Funny how a good understanding of human nature gets you labeled a "rightie" isn't it ?

Maybe not so funny .... this entire discussion ( like so many in the arena of politics ) has to do with whether we understand or DON'T understand ourselves.

... and whether or not we want to be honest about it.

The abuses of our government and doctors are numerous ... in relation to experimenting on our own citizens without their knowledge. Spraying American cities with hazardous gasses many times, the old Tuskegee experiments, fed radioactive calcium to mentally disabled kids, Dr Leo Stanley at San Quentin ... animal implants into human prisoners, unconsented spinal taps on children, intentional cholera and bubonic plague infections, intentionally infecting children with TB, intentionally infecting children and adults with syphilis, intentionally infecting mental patients with the flu (Jonas Salk), infecting a baby with herpes, intentional infections of malaria on mental patients, 200 female prisoners infected with viral hepatitis intentionally along with another case of infecting mentally disabled children,

This is an endless list in the study of true human nature as opposed to the studies conducted ... now with an endless supply of babies ... think of the fun these doctors and government can have.

With advanced capabilities comes the responsibility of advanced wisdom as to how to best used them.

I'm not certain that we as humans have developed the advanced wisdom to match our scientific capabilities, but that's always the way with us humans, or so it seems, that we develop the capability first, and only after we develop the capability the wisdom to use it wisely. I can only hope that the same will apply here, i.e. that we will develop the required wisdom in time.
If a man were behind four months on his mortgage and was talking to you about his plans to build an addition on his home you would think him daft and delusional. But in Washington, ignoring a current crisis to discuss grand dreams is called “boldness” and “vision.”

That is wishful thinking, all you have to do is look around the world and then tell me "humans and wisdom" go together.

Rightists aren't just "honest" about their assertion that man is evil, they downright glory in it. For every Saddam Hussein there is an Albert Schweitzer. The fact is that humanity is still here after several million years is proof enough to me that mankind is not self-destructive by nature.

Stem cell research of this sort holds the key to immortality. If you truly want to die someday that is YOUR choice, but don't try to force it on me if it can be avoided

Next time you get sick or suffer serious injuries, only use treatments available a few thousand years ago. We don't want to tweak nature now do we?

Re: This can't possibly end well..

You notice that the dicks have a propensity for praying upon the defenseless? Nothing like mentally disabled children, the mentally ill, and prisoners to perform experiments on (a common thread amongst experimenters). This is the nature of mankind and government performing horrendous acts for "our" interests ... not because some fuckwad has visions of living forever. Just because we have a few saint like people floating around ... doesn't mean shit can't or won't be abused. As to eventual death ... shit happens and we all get a turn at life ... but I wouldn't have mine extended by infecting innocent people with disease ... destroying their lives or even killing them.

We already have a large supply of eggs. This technology just removes the need to enter vaginas to take them.

I really don't see the harm.
