heres a quicky
calliope st.= CAL-ee-O-p
chartres= charters (this one drove me nuts for a month)
etc.
the city is not french it's NAWLINS'
the quata is pseudo french but if you want paris go there, new orleans has her own beauty and amazing art architecture.........

NAWLINS', ha ha Yes, exactly what I meant. Very funny. However, this "Frenchness" seems important to them. I was there in November and everywhere they had big posters wishing a JOYEUX NOEL. This was cute.

Edit : In French the correct name of the city is LA NOUVELLE ORLÉANS.
Orleans is the city of Joanne of Arc.

Exactly, I hope this all revives. It's unique to the otherwise dull US.

So does anyone know of any "katrina jazz fund" or something like it, specifically aimed at helping the (poor) musicians who lost everything?

ES, this will not revive because this is not dead ...

Re: New Orleans Culture, will it revive?

I agree, but NAWLIN's culture was so tied to a particular atmosphere in a very special city, the buildings, the streets, the old quarters... And now all these people are spread all over the US, ripped apart.

I hope that its culture is strong enough, but I have my doubts... the place itself is extremely important for New Orleans's culture... I hope I'm wrong.

Re: New Orleans Culture, will it revive?

NO is not the first city in history, flooded ... or totally destroyed in a way or another . Europe is in fact the BEST example of devastated cities which came back to life again and again. I live in Berlin as one of the best examples ... Or Dresden.

I think NO will come to life again. It will be different and yet itself.

(As far as I am concerned, from what I know of the city, the only district I am really worried about in the Garden District ... Nothing to do with jazz, but wonderful colonial vilas. What's left of it ? )

Yet another slam on the US?

How would you know anything about the "otherwise dull US" if you've never been here?

Yes, NO is unique to the US - there's really no other city like it here (and it will be rebuilt, BTW). However, we've got other cities that are far from dull.

Sure, we've got our fair share of endless suburbs and clean, shiny, boring cities. But to claim that all of the US, outside of New Orleans, is dull - when you've never even been here - is just silly.

OTOH, I'm glad to see you suporting the musicians.

Well, there's this:
http://www.preservationhall.com/2.0/apparel.php
BTW, Preservation Hall is probably one of the most important Jazz spots in NO.

Re: New Orleans Culture, will it revive?

There is more to culture than music. The muscial heritage of N.O. is over shadowed by the animalistic behavior of about 70% of the population. Most of the descendents of the people who built N.O. have moved to Jefferson Parish, the North Shore, Slidell or moved away completely because Orleans Parish has become unlivable do to the human garbage that festers in the city (and runs it too).

What did that have to do with my post?

Can anyone translate?

LOL, you've obviously not lived in or near New Orleans. There was many great things about the city in the not-so-distant past and this tragedy gives it the chance to rebuild itself into the great place it once was.
How's the song go? ....Nobody taught her that it takes a lot of water, to wash away New Orleans.
