I used to know a man (now dead) who helped liberate the camps in Germany at the end of the war. The pictures you've seen of the stacks of emaciated bodies and the vast common graves are true. It was worse than it is possible for most of us to even imagine--it haunted him until his last days.

There is no source given for the piece you posted, therefore zero credibility. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proofs.

After WWII, the Cold War occurred which meant that the US media portrayed WWII as a battle between the US and Germany and Japan, with some aknowledgement to the contributions of our British Allies, even the French resistance has a bigger place in the US cultural record of WWII than Russia.
This despite the fact that most of the fighting and most of the casualties took place in the battle between Germany and Russia.

The historical record has always been there, but the popular culture has yet to fully absorb that WWII was mainly a battle between Hitler and Stalin.

The Nazis slaughtered millions of Jews. They slaughtered millions of Russians. They tortured and imprisoned millions more. Stalin and his minions slaughtered milions of his own people and tortured millions to death in his own camps. Imperial Japan slaughtered and tortured millions. There is no need for argument about this. It is obscene.

These people died ghastly deaths. Those who survived went on with new lives, but bearing the scars of those years. Some did not survive long. Some did.

The ALL deserve to be spoken of with the greatest respect. They had their dignity and worth assaulted while they were alive. We should not be treating them with contempt now. They suffered enough - more than we can possibly imagine.

This thread starts with a basic lie. The Russians did not capture all the German records of the concentration camps and hide them from everyone else. Those records were, and still are, mostly in the hands of the German government and many are in the hands of the US government.

Recently (within the past six months) the German government has stated that those records will be opened to scholars and those trying to discover what happened to relatives who were sent to the concentration camps.

The Holocaust is the most thoroughly documented horror in history. Attempts to "prove" that it did not occur simply prove the idiocy of the person who submits that concept. Eyewitnesses are still alive. And it was not just Jews. Homosexuals, those with incurable diseases, Gypsies, Russian POWs (who were considered less than full humans) and political enemies were also killed. Not all by gas either. Many were starved to death in work camps, such as in Camp Dora at Nordhausen, where V2s were built.

Yeah, right, and it was only coincidental that Germany and the Soviet Union were allies for the first two years of the war... Hitler wanted revenge on the Western powers for the defeat in World War 1. He did not like Russia either and turned east in order to defeat Russia and force Britain to surrender.

WW2 was a war between Germany and France/Britain from the start, the fact that much more people died on the East front is a different matter.

You make excellent points, Tim, but will we learn from these terrible examples? It doesn't seem like it, the House and Senate just made it legal for George Bush to have people tortured, set up secret prisons, and suspend the right of habeus corpus. The only two things disallowed were mutilation and rape. How are we different now than the people we have been discussing? Maybe our crimes have not risen to the level of theirs yet, but 14,000 people have already been "disappeared" into George's secret prisons. How many more will be required? I am ashamed that America has sunk to the level of making torture and secret prisons legal.
