He would have had to absolutely crush the rebel army. All the U.S. had to do in order to be winning was to maintain a standing army. As long as there was an army Britain wasn't in control.

To answer your question, the traitors would have been hanged. This would have simply incited another rebellion. And not 20 years later, more like immediately.

Hmmm...interesting topic. I think this is the likely answer. But in the meantime, the English would have become far more prepared for any future rebellion.

And likely become even more tyrannical.

I think King George would have gone mad.

Re: If america lost the revolutionary war what would King George III do?

Actually, it would all depend on precisely how the war was lost. If Britain had crushed the Rebellion very early on then there probably would have been a severe crackdown and high taxes.

But all that changed after the war really got underway. Time and again, the British attempted to make peace by promising to revoke all taxes and return local government to the colonies. Every day the war went on cost Britain money and made them look bad. Eventually Paraliament offered the Americans anything they wanted (seats in the House of Commons, local government, locally appointed judges, free-expansion Westward, a voice in all tax-related decisions, ect). Anything EXCEPT independent sovereignty. The Continental Congress came terribly close to accepting some of those offers.

In all, I expect that if the war had been lost early on, America would have been turned into another Ireland: oppressed, bitter, and impoverished.
If the war had ended later, with the US accepting the terms from Parliament, the colonies would have looked more like Canada: relatively independent and ruled with a light hand. Either way, I doubt there would have been a second Revolution, at least not anytime in the immediate future.

I think King George would have instead come around to William Pitt's way of thinking and openly embraced the thoughts of men like Charles Fox.

Of course, III was well on his way to being mad by 1789, so this is probably a fairly irrelevant thread, isn't it?

It was the Canadians that burned down Washington, just ask one. Based on bailey and others posts that is a source of national pride.

Re: If america lost the revolutionary war what would King George III do?

One have to remember that there were only about 1/3 of the population of the 13 states who supported the rebellion. Another 1/3 supported the Crown and 1/3 did not care much one way or the other. Many of those who were loyal to the Crown moved to Canada after the war, which naturally influenced the proportions of people supporting the rebellion and full independence in the newformed United States. These were the ones who wrote the history and who portrayed the rebels as the heroes.

Some historians have suggested that the rebels of the War of Independence had less chance of success that the rebels forming the Confederacy 80 years later.

It is quite conceivable that the rebels would have accepted British rule with far reaching autonomy. It is interesting to speculate about what would have happened later. I believe the Crown would have ended slavery early in the 1800's, just like it did in the rest of the British Empire. This would have saved America from the bloody War Between the States. There woudl probably have been a war over Texan independence, but I think the Texans would have been less inclined to give up their independence to what would ultimately have been the British Crown than to the USA. Perhaps we would have an independant Republic of Texas? The Brits and Americans could have waged a war against Mexico along with Texas and seized New Mexico and California, just like the USA did. Russia may have kept Alaska, the reason Russia sold it to the USA was to avoid it falling into the hands of the Brits - however, the Brits may have seized it anyway. America would probably have joined Britain as early as Canada did in the World Wars. Americans would probably still be spelling English correctly.
