Re: 63rd Anniversary of D-Day.
The main importance of the Normandy Invasion was not that it was the start of the downfall of the Third Reich. On the contrary, Hitler's Germany was already on the way of losing the war.
The most important result of the invasion was that the West liberated France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, and huge parts of Germany and Austria, and that the Brits could reach the Baltic Sea shore before the Russians could invade Denmark. This meant that the Soviet Union could only conquer East and Central Europe. Thus, Western Europe could develop as free, democratic countries during the decades that the communists held East and Central Europe captive.
