Aren't most members of the Bundeswehr still conscripts?

Since Somalia, people more and more learned to accept that the Bundeswehr is becoming an aspect of our foreign policy.
Mabus, you have hit the nail on the head. Sadly, these are all things I heard some German soldiers complain about while I worked with them. Many really envied my fellow Marines and I, simply because we take the history of our service very seriously and take pride the fact that we are inheritors of that history. We are not afraid to let our chests swell when we talk about our history, or our accomplishments. The German soldiers of the Bundeswehr, as you mentioned, could not do anything like that and not get looks of contempt from some of their fellow soldiers.

Well in any army..years of inactivity, a lack of clear spirit de corp and identity will do that to a force…..I suspect I would be amazed if I came upon the same unit I visited with for a while back Hohenfels in 85….we met an armed truppe in a town…… I hade never been close to a Leopard, and wanted to check on out…we had a few beers of course and we sauntered down the hill and they gave me a tour…the moral was excellent ..being an amateur military historian and read many account of ww2, we started talking about panzer units and battles on the eastern front….Hoth, Hausser, Balck and the 11th panzer on the Nizchne Chirskeye etc etc etc..…they knew there heritage even if they could not exactly display it as such…but, they did have a gallery they traveled with for their Company TOC….pictures of wittman, bolter, carius, sandrock…they knew the Panzer Lied too, but didn’t sing it very often due to political correctness bullshit….anyway….so it goes…

The Bundeswehr has become a catchment basin for woozies and braindead morons. They need to play with old bones and shout "Die Nigga" while shooting to feel like real men. Every pinch of old prussia's spirit is needed, now that our army of tourists is beeing deployed into the battlefield.
Basically agreed, but you have to keep in mind also that it's a draft army and people who go there for 11 month because they have to, are in no way capable or motivated to make their job professionally. Imho we should switch to a professional army asap and thereby use the funds more efficiently, too.

I'm not sure wether we need symbols which were overused in 3rd Reich, but we sure need to get prepared for more then defending germany against a soviet tank invasion!!

In case we'll have responsible us partners we can trust again soon (I'm not talking about mccain!!!), the politicians (and the german people) will feel much better in approving military actions. This will especially be true for afghanistan - right now it would be political suicide in germany to send "german troops into bush-made conflicts".

Re: Germany Discusses Return of the Iron Cross

Very interesting Mabus. I mentioned earlier in this thread a radio report on the fitness (or lack thereof) of today's German Army troops. It must be a very strange situation to feel as though you must avoid taking pride in your army's lineage and history while serving, it is a very big deal in the US Army.

Re: Germany Discusses Return of the Iron Cross

I personally found the critizisem that the Bundeswehr can't have the Iron Cross because it was used during the Nazi time moronic...
I mean that medal is almost 200 Years old... the knights cross dates back to the middleage and is the symbol of the Bundeswehr.
(In a design, that is from WW1/2 time btw... black and white)

==>>
Balkenkreuz WW2-era ==>> Bundeswehr Symbol as found on every vehicle...

But what would you give it for today?
Shooting at two gunmen in an unarmored car in Kosovo?
Making photos in Afganistan?

----------------

I am personally surprised how much the german attitude towards military interventions has changed... from unthinkable to common foreign politics in less than a decade.
If it would finally be wrapped into some kind of "European Army" cloak you could have a healthy militarism in the same time... but German militarism will remain a public taboo for a while... It's been a taboo for so long, that in the public opinion militarism is a subject for right wing extremists only.

I am very curious to find out if soldiers that served in the East German military were able to posses any such historic pride. My guess is that it was especially "verboten" on that side of the iron curtain.

I am also curious about that... I think it must have been alot like "doublethink" from George Orwells 1984...

On one side the the east German Army (NVA) took pride in keeping german military traditions (also of the Wehrmacht) much more then the Bundeswehr... on the other side, all Nazi-History was strangly connected to the West only... while the Bundeswehr was considered more like a US Puppet Militia... And Nato standartisation (US Helment, Uniform similarity,...) was considered a proof for the lack of selfdetermination in westgermany...

Even that weired NVA Helmet was a Wehrmacht-Prototype tested since 1943...

But I am really no expert on the subject...

Beyond taking some elements of the former uniform (like the helmet you mentioned) and elements of traditional close order drill (goose-step), I think they pretty much totally broke with former traditions just like the Bundeswehr. I know about a quarter of their initial officer corps was former Wehrmacht. They also continued to name units, and wore cuff titles.

good question.....when I was on the border we yelled and hooted at the “gaks”, thats what we called them, I cannot remember what the acronym stood for...anyway, we would pick a deserted spot and go across the neutral zone and use a hatchet to take the east german border crests off the poles.....had one up until 94..sold it...what an idiot..

Re: Germany Discusses Return of the Iron Cross

The Jewish council weighs in. No real surprise at their position.

Bravery Medal Tainted by Nazis: Jewish Council Attacks German Plans for New Iron Cross - International - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News

Quote:
Jewish Council Attacks German Plans for New Iron Cross
Germany's Central Council of Jews is opposed to plans to reintroduce the Iron Cross as a new bravery medal for German solidiers. The decoration, they say, is tied too closely with World War II.

Germany's Central Council of Jews has criticized German plans to introduce a bravery medal similar to the Iron Cross, banished after World War II because of ist association with Nazi military aggression.

Stephan Cramer, the General Secretary of the Council, said he had no problems with such a medal per se and that it was overdue for Germany's modern army, the Bundeswehr.

"But one must clearly reject any plans to carry on the tradition of the 'Iron Cross'," Kramer said in a statement. "Introducing the 'Iron Cross' as a possible bravery medal for the Bundeswehr, as being discussed by some people including General Inspector (Wolfgang) Schneiderhan, would refer back to a disastrous tradition which led to humanity's greatest crime during National Socialism," said Kramer in a statement.

"The traditions associated with the Iron Cross especially during National Socialism aren't the traditions of the German Bundeswehr and it would be fatal if a connection were made due to a mistaken understanding of tradition," the statement continued.

The German parliament has been discussing whether to reintroduce a new bravery medal akin to the Iron Cross.

This place Dr. Muellers had 4 or 5 floors, each floor had something deifferent. 1st floor was a sex shop, 2d floor was live sex shows, third floor was a pornokino, 4th floor was all peep shows.

I didn't go to the telephone bar but had a very unusual experience at a different bar, it was a strip joint, as I was leaving I went into what I thought was a public men's room in the hallway outside the bar but it was a "staging area" I guess for all of the hookers in the building. Hundreds of them standing there in a room the sze of a subway station.
