In case you have about 2 million Euro lying around or look for a present, the former royal house of Germany ( Prussia), the Hohenzollern family, sells its most precious diamond. The stone was bought in Constantinople in the late 1500s, most likely originated in India and has passed through many royal houses over centuries. It is also pictured on a wedding potrait of french king Henri IV and his wife Maria de Medici from 1604. Via the Netherlands the diamond passed on to Germany, where it was hidden with the crown jewels, after emperor Wilhelm II went into exile in 1918. After WW II it was briefly seized by british soldiers but returned to the imperial german royal family.
The stone will now be auctioned in Geneva, Switzerland in May :

Whatever the price, it's sad that it's being sold...I would guess that someone is in dire straits to have to sell such a historical piece.

Well, pity with the former royal family for running financially out of steam IŽd call undeserved ( and not only because the last Hohenzollern monarch, emperor Wilhelm the II was sent into exile after WW I, as one of those responsible). If they indeed gambled away their fortune and manage to sell this diamond and other stuff they will still be better off than most of us ever will.
And if the stone goes to a museum ( the german national museum "Unter den Linden" in Berlin apparently has plans) it will at least be accesible to the public ( as it should be.
