I agree. I pity them, AND I think their courage and their perseverence were remarkable. That is the frustrating thing about reading about World War 1. It's almost unbearable to read about. The Somme! Horrible. But I do admire their courage.

Thanks!

But, seriously, I knew this when I took things into account. Just to be sure I wasn't being a retard (which I can be often), I went and double checked a modern day map (that was flat, like these) and still, Alaska is not as giant as it is in that map.

Maybe my eyes are failing me, but dammit, it looks like it's the same latitudinal length as Russia...

I'll just shut up now. That's what I get for having been to every state....but Alaska...

You're right. The perspective is slightly off. That's one of the fascinating things about old maps. Occasionally that happens. BTW - any chance of putting these in their own section, so they don't get lost in the shuffle? That way they can be used for reference and added to. Is that possible - moderator?

I think it could be a good source for references. I, unfortunately don't have the power to add new forums on this site. I saw someone (was it Anselme?) who made a post asking Marc to add a forum and that's really the best way to go about it. If it has enough of a demand, Marc is usually pretty good at giving the people what they want. My only concern may be that too many large pictures posted here might take up a bit too much space...

Anyways, go on over to the thread asking for this type of forum and give your support!

It's really a good map. And my hometown is on it.

I did. That was me - Anselme came up with the idea while we were discussing something else and I posted the request. I'll just wait. I understand if they're too big - no big deal! (I love these maps, so I'm biased )Thanks for your help!

....my town was made in the 60's.....

But all the town around me are hundreds of years old. I love watching Civil War movies and shows and seeing all this history that literally happened in my own backyard. I can't imagine how lucky you are to have hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of years of more history around you.

Actually, I probably do have hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of years of history in my own backyard, we just don't have much laying around from the Native Americans that tells it.

You got to look for Westphalia, it's in the west, near Holland and Belgium.

The history of Dortmund goes back as far as 880 AD, when the city was first mentioned in official documents as Throtmanni. It was a small village at that time. In 1152 the emperor Barbarossa came to Dortmund and rebuilt the town, which had been destroyed in a fire shortly before. For two years Dortmund was the residence of Barbarossa - a short time, but afterwards it grew to become one of the most powerful towns of the empire. In the 13th century Dortmund joined the Hanseatic League. It attained the status of an Imperial Free City, i.e. it was directly subordinated to the emperor.

Well, you don't really see that my town is more than 1,100 years old, as it was completely destroyed in WW2. So you don't find many builidngs that are older than 60 years.

Found it! I checked the link. 1100 years. What an extraordinary history. Is the influence of Belgium and the Netherlands strong in the culture?

No, not really. Belgium and Holland are rather small countries and there is not so much difference in there culture to either Germany or France. But don't mention that to someone from Holland or Belgium.
