Ásatrú

Hello everyone! I am curious to know if anyone here is familiar with Ásatrú. I have been doing a lot of research in it lately, and would like so speak with someone who might know about it, practice it, or know someone who practices it.

Re: Ásatrú

All I know of Ásatrú is what I've heard in some Norweigan black metal music. Isn't a branch of death metal called Ásatrú?

Of the revived version of it, not much, except that some neo-nazi's in this country (Norway) have come to believe in it. A guy called Tore Tvedt had a visit from Odin while asleep, he aparantly came in the window and told him to eliminate the jews. True Story.

True story, I'm not kidding. Do you see a smiley?

What do you want to know about it? First, make sure that you seperate Odinism from Asatru. The two only have a minimum comparison (sorry Rotten). The racisist have appropriated a significant portion of the Viking philosophies based on Hitler's misuse. Korimyr (a previous poster) knew a lot about it.
Make sure you learn all you can about the Nine Noble Virtues.

Re: Ásatrú

As a native of Sweden, one of the old Scandinavian countries where people believed in the Asa gods before Christianity took over, I learned the basics in elementary school. It is considered basic knowledge in Sweden, something everyone knows a little about.

Sweden before Christianity was centered around Lake Mälaren, and still is. Stockholm was founded in 1252, but there are older cities around Mälaren. The main city of the cult was Upsala, which is these days best known for Upsala University, the oldest university in Scandinavia.

The main gods of the Swedish belief was Oden, Tor, and Frey. Oden was the King of the gods, Tor and Frey was his sons. Tor was the strongest god, thunder was believed to be the sound of him fighting evil giants. Frey was the god of fertility (he is sometimes depicted with a huge erect penis). These three gods had a temple at Upsala, at the site of the first Christian cathedral.

I guess there are a lot of books about this belief to be found in English as well, is there any questions besides that?
