Sacrifices aren't allowed because the Temple was destroyed.... so unless it's been rebuilt and I don't know about it, sacrifices are a no no.

Perhaps, and I know I am talking crazy here... perhaps we hear about disastors that happen in the US because we live in the US? I would wager that someone in the Congo or even China don't know about the tornadoes in the south of the US. Hell, I bet there are places within the US that didn't hear much about them.

And, since the Gulf of Mexico feeds a lot into weather systems, I think this may have less to do with some made-up entity than with naturally occuring weather systems.
