Did Jesus have children? Brothers or Sisters?
Not being a Christain, I am not sure. However, I have noticed any web sites dealing with this sort of question, though all seem to say different things and I am unsure as to which is correct. Some say Jesus and Mary had a child, some say they did not. Some say Jesus had brothers, some say the opposite. Not sure on what to believe ...
Perhaps some of the Christians on here could advise their opinion ... |

Yes, I was told this too but don't know enough on the topic to comment.

Are christians taught that jesus had children? I don't believe they are. When you consider that christians subscribe to christian teachings, it only makes sense that a christian would probably say that jesus didn't have children. I responded not as a slam on you or on christians. Nice to see, though, that it really is you who are incapable of an honest, reasonable conversation...

Honestly, your reaction to my reply was uncalled for and, even in light of your apology, quite telling...

I asked "Which is"? Reason being, I had absolutely no idea what you were referring to. I am unsure as to why you think I dismissed anything, but I did not. As for the rest of my response goes, I did not mean any offense by it. What I was referring to was our conversation on other threads where you implied I don't know much or anything about the topics being discussed and I respond by saying I do - on this thread, I really DON'T - for some reason, I found this funny. My apologies. |

Re: Did Jesus have children? Brothers or Sisters?
doesn't really matter whether he had children to me. Remember he was fully human along with being fully divine. Does Jesus having children or a family for that matter change the fact that he died and was raised from the dead for my sin?

It depends on which texts your accept as being more authoratative. The Christian church, to generalize, accepts the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and (with some exceptions) John as being the most reliable accounts of Jesus' life. None of these accounts mention Jesus having a spouse or children. The accounts of Matthew, Mark and Luke (not sure about John) DO refer to Jesus' "brothers". Some theologians have claimed that the term could also mean "cousins", but I've never seen it translated that way. Claims of Jesus being married and having children come from other accounts, such as the Gospel of Mary Magdelene and the Gospel of Phillip. The Christian church does not consider these sources to be reliable both because they conflict with the other gospels and because they were clearly written long after the others and were by and large rejected by the early church (who presumably would have the best access to accounts of what "really happened"). However, that does't necessarily answer the question, at least not all of it. For, while it would be quite odd for none of the Biblical gospels (or any of the epistles) to mention Jesus having a family, it is also somewhat odd that none of them specifically mentioned that he was single. An unmarried Jew at age 30 in the first century AD would have been somewhat unsusual. So it's a toss up. Personally, I doubt he was married or had children since I know of no source I consider even slightly reliable historically that refers to them, but I wouldn't be adament about it. As Non Sequitur said, I don't think any essential Christian doctrine would actually be effected one way or the other. But that's just my two cents. |

I have been taught that Jesus did not have any Children but did have half brothers and sisters.
