My ex was non-observant - her mother was Jewish, her father Irish (Catholic of course ). While she wasn't observant she knew all the holidays and rituals from her mother who educated her about her Jewish heritage without making a big deal of it. Politically she is very pro-Israel, no surprise there

There are asian jews, black jews - jews from all nationalities. The fact is that jews don't believe there is any special benefit to being jewish so conversion isn't any huge issue. People can convert if they want to join the tribe - but there is no idea of personal salvation in judaism, therefore being jewish gets you nothing.

Any child of a jewish mother is a jew - desert people are practical, and remember, this tribe is over 6,000 years old. Anyone who chooses to convert is also a jew- reasons don't really matter (marriage, etc.).

My mother was jewish, my father wasn't - he was native american (Algonquin). My stepfather converted to judaism before he met my mother - he was Irish. My husband is lebanese/syrian and agnostic. At this point in time I'm sort of a neopagan jubu in religion.

By that I mean how can a jew belong to a race, or be a race of its own.

I think it's because race is a cultural construct - and its meaning keeps changing. Jews were regarded as a race back when the idea first began, but so were moors, and scots. Now we tend to stick with three or four categories - white, black, asian - which is in no way scientific.

That is a hard one. mainly because of the problem of catagorizing a "Jew" Is it a religion or a class? it certainly isn't a Race. Perhaps Hebrew, arabic, or some such. In either of those they are Caucoids. but there are Negroid jews too, and I assume, some mongoid jews.
