Experience at the Simpsons movie. Is this racist?

Last night I went to movie theater to see the Simpsons movie.

It was good, but about halfway through the movie a group of people came in and they were very loud and continued to be very loud and disturbing through most of the movie.

And that pretty much happens every single time I go to the movie theater, at least 9 times out of 10. Which is why I usually wait for the DVD.

And I can't help but notice that the offenders ALWAYS fit a certain profile. That is they are black.

Now I know that being disruptive in movie theaters is not a racial quality, but it certainly is a quality of young people who are part of a certain urban culture.

And it goes with out saying that being loud in a movie theater is very annoying.

So the Simpson's movie had a line that seemed like poetic justice.

There was a scene where Mayor Quimby calls a town hall meeting to discuss the impending environmental crisis at Lake Springfield. Perhaps poking fun at Homeland Security's color-coded terrorist alerts, the Mayor says: "People, this is serious. It's a Code Black alert!"

And then Lenny says "Black? That's the worst color there is!" and then turns to his buddy Carl and says, "No offense, Carl." Carl cheerfully responds, "None taken, Lenny."

And I laughed so hard and I wanted the loud people to hear me.

Does that make me racist? Don't I have a right to be offended and pissed off and to find pleasure, or comic relief, knowing the offenders just got "dissed"?

Yes.

Why didn't you just ask the management to remove them? Lubricated with a demand for your money back because poor management of the cinema prevented you from enjoying the film?

Good answer!

Now, one could argue that the scene you cited from the movie had racist overtones, but you were completely justified. Unless maybe your laughter prevented any third-party patrons from enjoying the film, then it gets more complicated than I want to deal with right now...

It might BE black people that always do this in your area.

In MY area though, it's ALL people. Loud, noisy morons of ALL colors. Race has nothing to do with it. People have no manners.

I always wait to rent movies. I can't stand going into a theater anymore with herds of gobbling, prattling turkeys.

I noticed that around here it has more to do with age than race. Both black and white adults tend to be respectful and quiet in movies while teenagers and children of all races tend to be noisy.

I live in Houston, TX, which like New Orleans and Atlanta, have huge populations of otherwise ghetto people who engage in obnoxiously uncivil behavior.

Like I said earlier, it's not a racial thing it's a cultural thing.

As my very liberal girlfriend from New Jersey told me that after living here for a few years that nobody back East is aware of what it is really like.

But go ahead take the "politician" approach and say it is just teenagers.

I have to admit thats funny :-)

That's the first time, that I've ever been accused of taking the political approach :-)

So, maybe it is a cultural thing. I don't live in that area. Where I live it's just a teenybopper thing and adults that are ill mannered slobs as well.

Re: Experience at the Simpsons movie. Is this racist?

Thanks for your understanding.

It's a difficult subject to talk about. We have to choose our words wisely or else face the irreconciliable accusations of racism.

I would not be talking about it, if my patience had not been consistently worn thin by people who I know are trying to piss the "white folks" off.

Obviously it works. I could go on and on with other examples, but the movie theater example is the most common.

Right,

Like New Orleans Mayor Nagin saying to a press conference that "New Orleans will be a Chocolate City again". And then he gets re-elected.

See I appreciate guys like Carlos Mencia, he's an equal opportunity shit talker. But he even said, it's one thing that white people can not do.

Oh we CAN do it. We just take more heat for it.

But when everyone ELSE stops making remarks that can be somehow seen as racist, then I will too.

Until then, everyone can shuttup about racist this .. bigot that,,, yadda yadda yakka yakka.

It's pure crap.

The movie isn't racist unless you think the joke is racist and throw it at the face of blacks.
The loud guys deserved it, but not the other blacks in the theater. If there were any, obviously.

I do not consider myself racist, I am equally hateful of any people who misbehave.

Re: Experience at the Simpsons movie. Is this racist?

It's like you said, a cultural thing, not a racial thing. It's perfectly fine to be annoyed at discourtious behavior and perfectly fine to note the profile of the people who are in that culture.
