Well, Wharfedale have been doing pretty well, won our last game against waterloo well and have generally looked good, still not enough in the forward though. I suppose Esher will struggle with the league they're in, it a bit tougher than ours.

That's actually not strictly accurate. The issue with the Sharia courts operating in the UK is not about divorce which most have no problem with, the issue is that they are overstepping their boundries and dealing with domestic violence and that is an issue which should be left to the police. Domestic violence is illegal - it is not appropriate for it to be dealt with by religious courts. Muslim women can feel intimidated into having this illegal act dealt with by a court with no remit to judge. That is an outrage.

Whilst I have no real issue with these courts for civil matters, it is absolutely not right for them to deal with issues which are against the law of the land.

And considering what the Koran has to say on the subject, it should never, ever be left to a Shariah court.

My opinion is that one is subject to the law of the land in which one resides. I live in the UK, and I am bound by it's laws. I can't go around shooting someone and then claiming 'justifiable homicide'! Likewise with Sharia.... I have no problem with anyone who wants to live under Sharia law living in a country that is ruled by that legal system. Clearly though, the UK should not allow domestic violence issues to be dealt with by a court that has no legal authority. There is only one appropriate place for DV issues, and that is in a UK court of law.

ISLAMIC law has been officially adopted in Britain, with sharia courts given powers to rule on Muslim civil cases.

Siddiqi said he expected the courts to handle a greater number of “smaller” criminal cases in coming years as more Muslim clients approach them. “All we are doing is regulating community affairs in these cases,” said Siddiqi, chairman of the governing council of the tribunal.

Jewish Beth Din courts operate under the same provision in the Arbitration Act and resolve civil cases, ranging from divorce to business disputes. They have existed in Britain for more than 100 years, and previously operated under a precursor to the act.

There are concerns that women who agree to go to tribunal courts are getting worse deals because Islamic law favours men.

Siddiqi said that in a recent inheritance dispute handled by the court in Nuneaton, the estate of a Midlands man was divided between three daughters and two sons.

The judges on the panel gave the sons twice as much as the daughters, in accordance with sharia. Had the family gone to a normal British court, the daughters would have got equal amounts.

In the six cases of domestic violence, Siddiqi said the judges ordered the husbands to take anger management classes and mentoring from community elders. There was no further punishment.

In each case, the women subsequently withdrew the complaints they had lodged with the police and the police stopped their investigations.


You may be fine with a civil court - of any religious persuasion - stepping in on domestic violence issues, I - for one - am not! It is in no way appropriate for these courts to deal with domestic violence or any other issues which rightly belong being dealt with by the police.
