And you thought witch burning was a thing of the past?

Turns out evangelical Christians have been traveling to Nigeria spreading nonsense about witches and predictably the locals have mixed it with their own ancient superstitions and now when something bad happens they blame their children for being witches and murder them.

The Associated Press: Churches denounce African children as "witches"

EKET, Nigeria — The nine-year-old boy lay on a bloodstained hospital sheet crawling with ants, staring blindly at the wall.

His family pastor had accused him of being a witch, and his father then tried to force acid down his throat as an exorcism. It spilled as he struggled, burning away his face and eyes. The emaciated boy barely had strength left to whisper the name of the church that had denounced him — Mount Zion Lighthouse.

A month later, he died.

Nwanaokwo Edet was one of an increasing number of children in Africa accused of witchcraft by pastors and then tortured or killed, often by family members. Pastors were involved in half of 200 cases of "witch children" reviewed by the AP, and 13 churches were named in the case files.

But the bible is a book of love!

More evidence that religion isn't a good thing for the people of this planet.

What does that have to do with the OP?

Just finding a moment to bash on the Bible? There is already another thread running with that theme.

They are taking phrases literally from the bible, "thou shalt not suffer a witch to live".

Sorry if the truth hurts.

When I saw your thread title I was like - Bullshit its common in Africa.

I saw a video out of Africa where a village burned 10 or so people alive because they were accused of being practicing witches.

Savage ass shit.

The problem with organized religion is, IMHO, that is is organized of human beings. Many human beings, unfortunately, suck.

Hummm, love that radical Christianity, when mixed with shamanism and traditional tribal myth it really becomes a volitile combo. they're hunting down Albinos in Tanzania as well...

Religion is nothing more then an ethics/moral code.

Whats the difference if you're a Catholic, KKK member, Black Panther, Opus Dei, Feminist etc ...

I don't see religion as being a problem but rather extremism being a problem.

I love how when all this gets mixed together people use it as a means to bash the bible over 10 words.

I guess the other pages that talk about love and peace are completely irrelevant.

As evangelical Christianity has grown in Africa so has witch burning.

The problem is superstition mixed with desperation. Religion thrives off of destitute people.
