A moderate Republican, Powell urged his party on Sunday to support immigration generally because those who come from abroad are, in his words, "what's keeping this country's lifeblood moving forward."

Powell said a path to legal status should be offered to illegal immigrants because they do work that needs to get done.

At his own house, he said on NBC's "Meet the Press," illegal immigrants are always around when he needs work done.

He did not specify whether he hired them directly or they showed up with contractors.

He should be... he is advocating breaking the law for his personal gain of not paying near what he should for repairs on his home. Note, he is not saying anything (as far as I can tell from the short article) about the availability of legal residents of this country willing and able to do the work. He only is saying that illegals are here and he offered little evidence to support that illegals keep the country moving. He should be brought to task for hiring illegals.

This is a very important point:

He did not specify whether he hired them directly or they showed up with contractors.

If he hired them directly, he should be, at a minimu, fined out the ass. If they showed up with contractors, the contractors should be fined out the ass. The question that would then need to be answered is whether or not Powell knew, and hired them anyway...

He knew illegals were working on his house and it seems they have been doing it for some time as "they are always around when I need them."

So all you that want to hang employers here's your man. Make an example out of him.

Me, rather than chasing people all over the country, stop illegals at the border, then Powell would have to hire American Citizens.

Powell is now trying to 'walk this back'

The better question is: how does he know that these guys are illegal?

Did he check their papers? If so and he hired them anyway... then he's guilty as hell.

If he didn't check their papers, then: is Colin Powell racially profiling?

If that were possible in a free country you would have a point. The day we start winning the ridiculous "war on drugs" is the day I start believing we can seal the borders without turning this country in to more of a police state.
Me I'd rather enforce the employment regulations that legal citizens are expected to obey than waste more trillions trying to plug holes that cannot be plugged.

Drugs are easier to transport than people. I mean think about it, a person needs water, food, and shelter and is probably 5.5' and weighs 175 lbs. A bag of cocaine is nothing and I might add in the eye of the drug lords is 1,000 times more profitable.

As for your police state comment, how does stopping illegals at the border translate to the US becoming a police state? So you would rather the police raid every American's home and every business on an ongoing basis to check for illegals, now I call that a police state.

If Powell pays a fine or goes to jail for hiring illegals that's fine with me. But it will never happen. Because politicians don't want to stop illegal immigration.
That's why they keep refusing to enforce the employment laws or give them teeth. That's why they keep feeding the ignorant rubes this nonsense about sealing the borders. And the idiots keep lapping it up because they like throwing brown people in jail or - even better - lining them up against the nearest wall and mowing them down.

Dope smugglers bring planeloads and boatloads and truckloads of drugs into this country every day so the difference in size between a person and a bag of dope is irrelevant. This country has 11,000 miles of border and over 80% of the population lives within 50 miles of one. So yes you need a police state to efficiently seal the borders. It cannot be done in a free country.

Anyone who has given the subject even a little bit of thought wants to end the ridiculous war on drugs. As for border policy I am merely hoping reason will prevail. And pretending the borders can be sealed effectively enough to impinge on the illegal workers problem is not reasonable. If you want to end illegal immigration you stop it at the source. And the source is jobs. Without the promise of jobs the vast majority of illegals stay home.

No, the source is fucking Mexico, THAT'S the source.

We need to insist that Mexico do better for its' citizens. If it doesn't, then we arm the border and cut off all aid to them.

The border can be sealed. Unfortunately, too many libs in this country don't have the stomach for it...
