Fascinating insight into your character and mental prowess here, CommissionLover. Don't let me interrupt.

Hey Matt,

Notice in her article that she says she's been advised to call herself Canadian. See, I didn't make it up - it's a well-known fact. Secondly, I like it even less than you because I'm a real Canadian. Could there perhaps be a link between US policies and the reaction Americans receive abroad? Hmmmm...starting with softwood lumber (which looks like it will finally be resolved according to today's papers...with Canada getting most of the money back that was stolen from it by the US) and progressing on to border policies on both the Northern and Southern frontiers and then moving into "old" Europe and then Iraq....YES, there is a link! Question is, when will enough Americans realize this basic fact and do something constructive about it, like turfing Rummey and Condi and "the decider."

Re: Anti-Americanism 'feels like racism'

I am fortunate enough to get to visit Europe, Britain, and Ireland fairly frequently, and I never have a problem.
\

I also very much act like an American. I always wear ball caps, shorts, and white tennis shoes. When I get "dressed up", I wear cowboy boots.

My point is that I don't try to hide my Americanism and ALL of the people I have met have ALWAYS been nice.

Sounds like an overly simplistic victim-mentality AMerican trying to get some sort of lawsuit going.

Fortunately, I don't think the Brits are that sue-happy.

No - that level of hatred goes far beyond politics. What she is talking about is a truly ferocious hatred that is irrational. Your anti-Americanism is apparently not quite up to British standards.

This is always an interesting topic for me. It seems, though, that almost all of this thread is garbage. Weird.

It keeps our economy roaring along, while our fast food industry creates more fat Americans than ever before. No wonder people around the world hate us for this. We're too big, too arrogant, and our foreign policies are a direct factor in us maintaining our glutinous lifestyle. Our schools can't churn out enough smart people, and therefore we import from countries like India and China for our high end labor force. Our kids get fatter, they play more video games, and are slowly turning into a generation of mindless pigs who cannot get a decent job because they either lack the education or the motivation. We also allowed a puppet government/regime to take over this country and slowly run it into the ground. Now, what does that say about the intelligence of the American voter?

When we see some of the most unbelievable rightwing hate coming from the likes of Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and so many others, and as millions around the world can hear them as well, then it should come as no surprise why we are hated by so many. We attacked a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, and sit while the presumed perpetrator roams around somewhere north of Pakistan (if that's really where he rumore to be) putting out audio tapes and threatening American interests whenever Bush's poll numbers look like they couldn't go any further South.

It is this transparency of lunacy coming from this country that has perplexed so many around the world. And we throw our military might around with such arrogance and blind hubris, that it's no wonder that many more countries now want the bomb.

This is Bush country. This is where he and his rightwing neocons have taken this country today.
These comments are just hysterical self-hatred.

The Brits dislike Bush so it is therefore acceptable to be abusive, obnoxious and spiteful to individuals because of their nationality?

I don't know if she is exaggerating or not - I have no way of knowing. But if even a small part of what she is saying is true, it is ludicrous: it is especially nauseating to hear Americans weep and wail and indulge in sickening self-hatred 9and even more sickening self-pity) and say "Yes! Hate me! I deserve it!"

Repulsive and sickening.

I started to, but I just ate.

And of course you are quite right - the OP is responsible - but I was hoping for more anyway.

No, I spent 4 years in the army in Germany, Kitzengen, Neu Ulm and Muchen as a Medic driving the blood truck. Then I spent two years after that as a civilian. Last time about two years ago went with the misses to France, of course I try to spend most of my time in Amsterdam, tried to make it back to Copenhagen wanted to visit Christania, is it still there?

Spent two years making the blood run between major hospitals in Europe for the 7th Medcom. Dang you know it was good to me, damn I could load up that truck (cracker box ambulance) with any thing I wanted in Amsterdam and never be pulled over at any border. It was the Blood Run!

My first marriage was to a German woman, got divorce some years later. She's doing good though, at least the last time I talked to her. Even speak pretty good Deutch, well did some years ago I'm going back a few years.

In fact I even got to go to Yugoslavia area back in '79 with Marion from Kitzengen, never would of imagined it to be so pretty there. Yet I would of been in trouble if the military got wind of it though. Something about the government? Spent more then one weekend pulling medical duty on the old 2-K Zone, that was a trip, stone out of my mind waving to the E. German Guards marching with their dogs up and down the fence over and over again like this 19 yr old stoned american was going to attack them! LOL I'm sure they didn't want to be there more then I though so they probably weren't all that bad.

Then when I got my European out I did about as much as when I was in the military, which wasn't much! Sold Insurance to G.I.'s! Plus other stuff so I did okay, I was kind of wild back then, settled down quite a bit. All in all I really don't have much against Europeans outside of the ones posting crap here that is.

Re: Anti-Americanism 'feels like racism'

My sister has lived in Germany for three years and she has had no problem whatsoever. I have visited England several times and I have had no problem. As a matter of fact, I am going to Germany next month for a week. I'll be sure to report back my experience.

Re: Anti-Americanism 'feels like racism'

As far as anti americanism, France was the worst and this was back in '78. Never had trouble in England and the Northern Nations of Netherlands, Sweden and such was cool as could be. Germany wasn't bad if you got away from the US military bases, yet Kitzengen and Neu Ulm I ran into it quite a bit. I suppose Neu Ulm had a lot of anti american shipped in because that was the Pershing Missiles located there, remember that. Once I was coming back from leave and the taxi guy stop two blocks away and told me I had to walk from there. Puzzled I got out and started walking till I notice something which was confirmed as I turned the corner to the main drag leading to the main entrance of the Post.

Damn, walll to wall people, very much an anti american protest and there I was, I had to some how make it to the front gates to sign in from leave before I was late. Luckily enough since I was a medic and my moutache and hair was a bit on the long side and no visible sign of being an american except for my Sears bag I was carrying not a big one luckily. I mix in with the crowd and made it about 50 feet from the gates. Then I look and seen a MP I knew well, so I waved and made a dash, other MP's were locking and loading on my ass! Had to pull out my ID and identify myself while between the Gate and the Crowd, that was a strange feeling.

Yet though I have to say one thing. Even though some English don't like us. Some Germans and Scandivians don't like us, rest assure all of them have deeper hatred for the French! One time while at Marion's Guesthouse from Kitzegen, a French guy came in, I thought they were going to kill him hell Ulga spit on the guy. So fellow Americans if you feel down just think that far more people dislike the French with far more passion then the Americans.
