Yes it exists. But on the flip side, France is probably the most romanticized nation in the general mindset of Americans. So there is passion both ways.

The anti-french sentiment in the United States is generally not directed at the french people, rather the french government like you said. I have, however, witnessed anti-french sentiment against the french people from my Austrian and German friends. They don't care about the french government but have a curious animosity for the French people (especially the Austrians).

Most anti american sentiment in Europe is due to our foreign policies and what people see in our movies and television, but in other parts of the world, such as the middle east, the people only see our military first hand which leaves them with a distrust for us. During the cold war the only thing the american people knew about the USSR was their weapons capabilites which instilled fear and anti-russian sentiment. People only know what they see and experience so anti-american sentiment is a reflection of peoples' experiences and views of America which in many cases are extremely limited.

Yeah, some french guys are a little bit anti-german guys and Austrians too. Everybody in France lost a parents in 1914. France lost 1.4M of guys in 1914/1918=10% of the active male population in 1918 and we got 4 266 000 of injury guys.

Quote:
Country -- Deads+wounded-- -- Deads - ---Wounded
Russia -----------7 650 000--- 1 700 000 -----5 950 000
Germany-------- 6 253 758 ----2 037 700 -4 216 058
France ----------5 513 800 ---1 357 800 4 266 000
Austria-Hongrie-4 820 000---- 1 200 000 3 620 000
Britain----------- 2 998 671 ---908 371 2 090 300

The last thing is that we took Alsace-Lorraine which is according to some Germans a part of their territory.

But, today, when i am in Germany, i do not feel any anti-french sentiment, i'm like in France. And the Germans are welcome in France too, and there is no animosity like in the past. Our sentiments are growing up with the time, and the new generations will be more and more happy togethers.
It's what i feel as french when i'm in Germany (4 times for a total of 3 month).

Perhabs the old peoples in Europe are not in peace with their neighbors, but the young guys are happy to meet themself between french and germans and Austrians too.

That is the problem. I doubt many Americans know anything about the "real" France. A country is made of different kind of people, different trends, different sub-cultures that may not appear to the eye of the innocent foreigner or may be misinterpreted when there are too much pre-existing, positive or negative, preconceptions (through the media, the articles published, the films ...)

The same goes for anti-americanism of course. There are too many myths surrounding America. It is difficult not to be affected by them.

Just finished the book "Blink" of Malcom Galdwell, a masterpiece on the way we think and make judgements and are affected by prejudices, even when we don't want to be.

PS: I am aware that the avatar I chose for myself goes right into this French mythology . But I like the picture.

Yeah in many american films, they describe France like it was in 1946 to 1954. Everybody with a "béret", the french guy as hostile, agressive with closed minds. Perhab is it why are we seen as typical stupid french

Believe it or not guys most of us stupid Americans actually can tell the difference between hollywood and real life. While you did not specifcally say the word stupid you must think we are if you think that is actually believe what hollywood portrays as real. It would be like saying we think of Germans as what they are portrayed as in Hogans Heros. Admittedly funny, but I am pretty sure we do not all see Germans as being like Col. Klink or Sgt. Schultz.

A simple insult is the result of your posts anti-french, and your little justifications about it.
It was just funny to see your little anti-frenchism in a thread about the anti-americanism.

But the answer to your question is simple. Yeah France sucks or could be more efficient, like every modern country of today.
