6. Altering "quotes"

Do not alter quotes when quoting another member. You may shorten the quotes by using elipses; however, you may not do so in an attempt to misrepresent the original quote.

OK mods, just what the heck does this mean. I just checked the dictionary for elipses (the dictionary spells it ellipses) but the definition makes no sense to me in terms of quotes.

Means you may shorten the quote if you clearly indicate where you did so.

Perhaps you could convince the french government to raise taxes still higher. If you fully fund all those government programs then maybe they would become more efficient? Why starve the hungry government machine?

Seriously, when I say "france sucks", I'm referring to your dealings with the US over the last 300 or so years. I don't give a hoot if your socialist utopia collapses, or gets turned into an Islamic regime.

You need to put three little squashed circles to replace the words you ommitted. The squashed circles get so small they sort of look like dots. This requires expensive drafting software and special computer, which I'd be kind enough to sell you for about ten large. Don't try cutting and pasting mine though, as this will make your computer crash, and may cause the entire internet to explode, damaging Al Gore's brain. If that happens he may throw another sulking fit, grow a beard and ask to be President of Harvard.

That is the point of prejudices, they affect us also when we consciously best try to not be affected by them.

Somehow, since all Americans are fat, anybody going to the USA will for sure see a lot of fat people. Actually, if you look at it more closely though, obesity is only a mass phenomenon is some States - I would say down in the South - less so on the East or West Coast ... And also definitely an "income"/status phenomenon - Have you seen any fat President of the USA ? On the other hand, Helmut Kohl in Germany was very very fat (his wife wrote a cooking book).

The only way is to clear your mind, not to expect anything. I don't know if it's possible.

Insults are never sophisticated.

But it,s true isn't it: "In France even children can speak French". (Mark Twain)

We call this "shooting one's self in the foot".

I've lived in New England, Upstate New York, as well as the South, and I can attest that Southeners are likely to be less inclined toward obesity. But don't let me stop you and your predjudices.

Sucre,

I would also point to the lenght of the average American work-week, especially for women, and the 'car as dining area' phenom which is a direct result, as reasons for increased US obesity rates.

Humm ...

Never mind. That was just my personal observations, but I've only been to New Orleans. People were really, really, really very fat there. All of them. I really felt like an anomaly and when I flew back to Germany I found the people to be comparatively slim.
On the other hand, I've been several times on the East Coast i.e and never experienced this impression of inadequacy.

And I really don't care shooting myself in the foot, since this is precisely what I meant. I don't mean to be any exception to the rule ...

Re: Anti-Americanism 'feels like racism'

It seems that everyone has become a self-styled Mod except the mods themselves. The reason for my question is that I had just received a "Warning" regarding altering Quotes, without real explaination. I responded asking what precisely I had done wrong. I am still waitiing for an answer. None is forthcoming. Now this came up. It seems the rules are changing. And everybody but the Mods are issuing directions.

I've never been to NO, nor do I expect to. It is not indicative of The South in any sense. Neither is Florida. The South is an extremely diverse area, much more so than the other places that I have lived. There are few generalities that can be made. We even have liberal enclaves!

I probably made a mistake by chosing "obesity" as an example. (After all, one of the possible answer of the poll for the reasons of "anti-americanism" is "fat Americans".)

Obesity is not an America-only problem, in fact it is a problem raising world-wide and also in third world countries. There are several reasons for obesity but bad diet, not too much food but bad diet, and from childhood on, seems to be the major one.

It's an interesting subject though.
