I had to look the word up in the dictionary.

I know that German food has a bad reputation in the US. It may have been so a long time ago and in some parts of Germany, more to the north, more to the east. But now we have the EU, people travel a lot, they have become aware of other taste, start to appreciate wine etc., the income has risen and food has become more diverse, but also more "rich".

I think that the problem is when children get fat too young ... As adults they will never catch up and get all possible health problems. [In Germany] the rising proportion of fat children it is not necessarily a problem of income of the family, some kids just seem to get everything they want, the parents like eating and the children participate in the dinner.

Which word? I hope it was baloney!

I don't think German food has a bad reputation here. Maybe I just don't notice because I like it so much. There are few German restaurants. But plenty of good German style food in the supermarkets. Claussen pickles, sauerkraut, dark whole grain bread, a small section of imported brands. Certainly plenty of beer.

The food with the worst reputation is England, IMO

Yes that would be identical with the reputation of english food in the rest of Europe

Does there exist something like Austrian food or restaurants in the US too?
If I am not wrong, Schwarzenegger runs a more or less "Austrian food" chain...

Yes, it was baloney.

Well, since I moved from France to Germany, I had to justify to my American friends the change of eating habits and whether I would "endure" it. Nothing to "endure" really. I didn't take weight either. The French for example usually look for the "specialities" they don't have at home - the black bread, the white sausage with the sweet mustard, the potatoes- herring salad, the soft cheese, this kind of stuff.

I've never heard of an Austrian restaurant or imported specialties here. Australian, perhaps, but not Austrian.

Without the benefit of a survey I'd guess that he most popular "ethic" restaurants, in order, are Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Thai, Indian. On occasion you'll see Irish, German, usually associated with pubs and the like.

...and, I assume in your case, French wine. Our personal house favorite is Gewurztraminer.

Its really funny, but as I get older the more I seek out the German specialties, and my German ancestry moved here in the 1860's.

Many people inside the EU have the same impression.

I had a look on the net. It seems that those restaurants that are serving Austrian specialities, are often referring themselves as German-Austrian restaurants. With a crude mixture of Bavarian and Austrian food.

Do you know Apfelstrudel at least in the US? Perhaps as German food too? Hey, but this is without any doubt Viennese cuisine.

Anyway, ever heard of "Sacher Torte"?

Slarti, I haven't even seen a German/Austran restaurant here, although this will give you a kick or confirm some preconcieved notiion but what the hell. I did see a German restaurant with an Austrian flag on the front of the builing. I asked the guy why they had done that and he told me it was the old Imperial German flag. Frankly after I got done laughing he was gone.

Frankly I will have to say I have yet to see any really good Austrian or German pastries here. I am sure there are some somewhere I just haven't run into them yet, it is a big country after all.

Re: Anti-Americanism 'feels like racism'

Aren't there a few Hofbrauhauses in the U.S? I know they would be nothing like the original, but I think that that is the closest you will come to finding any sort of German food here in the U.S. Correct me if I am wrong, but there are really only three main traditional german foods: Wurst, Schnitzel, and Beer. It would be difficult to build a restaurant around only those three things (a beer garden would be different, but a restaraunt wouldn't work out).

The only Austrian food that I can think of is the traditional Jause, and honestly, that does not appeal to the tastes of most Americans.

I can find German food establishments pretty much in most large cities, some better than others. I just haven't been able to find one specifically identified as Austrian.

I got the impression that Austria really doesn't have anything all to itself, hence not restaurants here. There is a lot of Italien and German influence along with a bit of Eastern European influence, but not a whole lot that is strictly Austrian.

Re: Anti-Americanism 'feels like racism'

Found the nokerl recipe Slarti. Will try it this weekend.

Now there is somehting that is uniquely Austrian MPD, in fact is is so unique you apperantly can only get it on one region of Austria. And it is probably the best egg dish I have ever had. The last time I had it was over 30 years ago and I can still remember what it tastes like. It is so light they have to anchor it to the table for you to eat it.

I just looked it up. There are two versions: one is flour based and goes with soups and the other, the Salzburger Nokerl, is the egg version and is served with deserts.

I plan on visiting some friends in Austria either next spring or summer, I'll have to add that to my list of things to try.
