But now you may know what I miss in the French gastronomy. Its eating outside, for reasonable prizes, but like at home (of course not Austrian but french homestyle food).

Anti-Americanism prompts push for "citizen diplomacy"

Wed Jul 26, 2006, WASHINGTON (Reuters)

With anti-American sentiment at unprecedented levels around the world, Americans worried about their country's low standing are pushing a grassroots campaign to change foreign perceptions of the United States "one handshake at a time."

The idea is to turn millions of Americans into "citizen diplomats" who use personal meetings with foreigners to counter the ugly image of the United States shown in a series of international public opinion polls. They show widespread negative attitudes not only toward U.S. policies but also toward the American people and, increasingly, even American products...

The international community is not populated with fools, nor do they tolerate them well.

This community understands this country is no longer governed by the principal core values of the founding fathers.

It is a corpratocracy, for sale to the highest bidder, and the membership in this "club" - from the President on down - have forgotten anything about truth or justice, which used to be prized, meaningful American values whicht gave us stature and respect around the world.

Unless and until We the People take back this government and demand accountability, no amount of "citizen diplomacy" can make a dent in the current perception of this country.

I had a look on the net. It seems that those restaurants that are serving Austrian specialities, are often referring themselves as German-Austrian restaurants. With a crude mixture of Bavarian and Austrian food.

Do you know Apfelstrudel at least in the US? Perhaps as German food too? Hey, but this is without any doubt Viennese cuisine.

Anyway, ever heard of "Sacher Torte"?
Never heard of either.

Wouldn't want you to infect yourself with any ideas you may pick up from going to a good German Restaurant.

ahh, it hurts to read how Austrian food is mixed up together with "German restaurants"...

but what should one do.
Its funny but it is like it is. I have no problem to be referred as European. I even appreciate that. But I am terribly allergic to be called German, like nearly all Austrians are.

I wasn't calling you a German. It's just there are no Austrian Restaurants here, the closest you can get to is German.

Oh- apple strudle- of course.

I have been to very few good German restaurants- that's my point. They just aren't popular here.

Re: Anti-Americanism 'feels like racism'

If people only would understand how the minority of hatred towards Israel in the Middle East completely overrides the majority’s neutrality with there "mafia style" complex I think more people would understand the position the US has taken with Israel. I think it would be great if people could see past the whole idea of a government blowing up a small country and being outraged about it. Its way more complex then that, if you have ever seen profiles on terror cells and home videos shot by suicide bombers and the selfish religious reasons for there actions I think most would be singing a different tune. it even goes deeper then that in some reigons people are born into hate for America and are expected to be the next holy warriors, allot of them are taught from an early age that Islam is the only religion and all others are infidel religions and they don’t matter and they are taught that these people are worthless and need to be destroyed in the name of the sacred and real religion "Islam" and to add insult to injury in there mind they think that Israel is not only an infidel country but a invading country and they know nothing beyond that at all because they get a censored education. Islamic nations that are ruled under strong Islamic rule do not get outside information at all; they get education that is dictated by terrorist regimes like Hammas. Americans see these people revolting the Middle East throwing rocks and stuff but what do these terrorist supporters really know about America and why it’s doing what its doing??? There have been plenty of people from these extremist Muslims strong holds that have made it out and said the world that they were taught and believed in is not the world that they know today. Part of me feels sad that one side if fighting for a myth but none the less they are fighting against America and trying to extinct Israel because of the misinformation and propaganda that is drilled into there minds.

I know Gort. I was not trying to accuse you. I just outed my .. my I dont know what that Austrian specialities are sold in those Restaurants like they would be German specialities.

WRT Apple strudle is somewhat apple pie. I never ate an American apple pie. What is it made out of? Is it more like an Apple strudel or like an Apple cake?

Btw, do you know Marillenködel? Its a speciality of my own region.

WRT Germknödel. That stuff is a major part of my food plan when cookinf for myself. Semi ready Germknödel are available at every supermarket. You throw it into cooking water let it sweat in the steam for 20 minutes they gain 2 times of size and are topped by a sugar-poppy covering with hot butter.

Delicious.

Re: Anti-Americanism 'feels like racism'

Well, for American people's information, China has no anti-Americanism. Although, the Chinese government don't follow American government's foreign policies, most Chinese people understand that for a superpower like US, it is OK to be arrogant and willful.

Hmmm Apple Pie, how to describe it. It isn't exactly like Apple Struddle, unless you put the apple pie on steroids. It is basically the apple part of the struddel with rather thin pasty crust on the top and bottom. I like it, but then again I like struddel as well. Of course being American it is culturally ingrained in me to like Apple Pie. You know "Mom, Apple Pie, and The girl next door" and all of that. That phrase is usually preceded by "As American as..."

Well at least the Germans have a type of cuisine that is classified as German food. I have yet to run into a Danish style restaurant here.
