BTW, Oompah music is another name for polka here in the states.

Oompah music? Music like this?

To be honest I have not had any Apfelkorn in twenty years but enjoyed it back in the day. Insafar as "Oompah Music" is concerned - we have an Oktoberfest celebration at a local inn every year, and they have a 20-piece Oompah band performing and it's great. I think the youngest musician is 75, and they all wear lederhosen and volksmarch hats. They should use the music on suicide hotlines to cheer people up.

But seriously, here's how I view this Anti-Americanism from abroad. I do not fucking like George Clooney. I have never met him and never will, so my dislike is irrational, but I do anyway. I don't like his smug attitude, I don't like the fact he's much more handsome than me, I resent the fact he owns a villa on Lake Como, it pisses me off that I have to get up every day and drive 2 hours each way to get to my job and he gets up when he feels like it, works on occasion at a job that is much more fun, and makes 1,000 times more money than me. I fume over the fact that he has had any easy life full of adulation, money, hot women and luxury. It annoys the shit out of me when he gets on his soapbox and begins telling the rest of us what is wrong with us. Like he is some fucking expert on international affairs because he was a member of the lucky sperm club, had everything handed to him, and has a pretty face. Man, I fucking hate that asshole, that prick, I'd love to trade places with him just so I could enjoy watching him suffer for once in his life. This is more or less the same mentality and emotions at the core of Anti-Americanism. And fuck you, George fucking Clooney, if you are reading this.

And since Germany is a country with relatively huge cultural differences, even in relatively small areas it is interesting how Bavaria has become to represent at least fifty percent of the cliches on Germany. Probably due to the best beer in the world ?

To be fair, that type of music (polka) and its forms is found in many regions outside of Bavaria. That being said, I will fully conceed that when most Americans (be they of German extraction or not) think of Germany they think of Bayern.

EDIT: I should point out that polka and Oom-pah music are technically two different styles of music. I fell in the typical trap of lumping them together.

This thread is descending into lunacy.

Perhaps it would have been better not to bring it back to life....

Re: Anti-Americanism 'feels like racism'

Well Tim do you agree with my analogy or not. And Voland, I will admit that prior to going to Germany I envisioned people drinking beer everywhere. Then I went on a Rhine River cruis near Frankfurt and found out that many restaurants in that area don't even serve beer, only wine. I remember a local guy laughing when I tried to order a beer, he told me "Beer is piss-water! Have a Rhine wine!" I did, and loved it, and then had several more.

One of the most famous Americans in history is Mr. Charles Chaplin. Why are you looking "abroad" if you are thinking about antiamericanism? Why not about the fact that americans can be very easy be 'unamerican' or 'antiamerican' - wether they are americans or not is not interesting for americans. A funny nation.

Would be interesiting to know how George Clooney would speak about Geroge Clooney if he would be you and you would be George Clooney. Whatever: I took a short look and thnk that he is a very interesting man. He does not like war - I hate war. It's good that he has a lot of money. No problem for me.

Please. I don't know why I thought about Mr. Charles Chaplin as I started to read your answer - but I think the way the 'little tramp' learned to survive in this world of assholes is not the worst way.

You're saying I am a fascist?

I have no idea what you are talking about.

This thread has turned to trash. That is my point.
