Right because he there is no way you can make a peaceful nuclear program into a military one. There is no way a leader who previously has said Iran should have a nuclear weapon, many times, or a man that in his campaign said he would develop one, and that he wants Israel destroyed could ever want to turn a nuclear program into a military one. That's like me saying give me a gun so I can shoot you. Then you say what?, Then I say oops, did I say that out loud, I meant give me a gun so I can make peace.

The only way to soften regime is the dialog. Remember Gorbachev... Isolation will only cause problems and will not produce the result. There're no examples of positive resolution of regimes after economical and political blockade. But only one thing can break off the regime - the dialog.

There is one example of economic sanctions working, and that is in South Africa. And the only reason it worked there is because white christian men did not want to be left out of the good ole boys club.

Actually it kind of worked in the Cold War , although we didn't call it sanctions. The Soviet economy was never able to stay current with the economies in the west. While we could provide both consumer goods and weapons systems they had to make a decision one or the other. Of course their economy wasn't all that good at either to begin with which helped tremendously.

The same type of restrictions will work in Iran but will not work in China. You have to be able to target the correct method of getting your message accross, however simply turning a blind eye to the problem is never the right solution. Maybe we should start selling more high tech weaponry to Ukraine and Georgia as a method of just earning money and nothing more.

I have come to think this is exactly why the Soviets collapsed. Western capitalism and freer trade through the 80's, combined with instantaneous communications affordable to businesses and homes in the west, really exposed and exploited the weakness of a centralized and planned state economy in the east. I probably would not consider this sanctions though, it was just a bit of the old traditional world not being able to compete with the fluid and efficient capitalist free market economy (combined with the rise of the computer and internet). China took note and is changing rapidly.

But because of the worlds thirst for oil and Iran giant reserves, they have proven to be amazingly resilient in achieving independence (one reason they genuinely seek nuclear power, since they can sell their oil rather than consume it). America has had a unilateral sanctions program in effect against iran for 30 years. This means that iran has had no access to the worlds greatest arms merchant. They have designed and built their own fighters, missiles, unmanned drones, tanks, navy, etc... They just signed a deal with Venezuela to have them build Iranian cars, among other economic deals they recently made...

Sanctions will simply have no effect on Iran, they have already proven that, and worse, it will most likely have the opposite effect. The only thing that will stop iran from enriching their own uranium is allowing them to play a larger role in ME affairs. That is they want, nothing less. This causes america, israel, saudi arabia, and egypt to get quite uncomfortable, for obvious reasons. It would swing the balance of power to a very large, and potentially very wealthy, Shiite alliance, Iraq, and Iran.

Im afraid military force is inevitable given the stakes.

Internet appeared for people only at 1994. USSR collapsed because Russians didn't want to spend money on Tadjikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Ukeraine, etc anymore... Russia has sponsored them, spending big summs on health care, education, etc... Russia has restored soviet life level and moving ahead while those respublics returned to the Middle Ages.

Th8is is just so much revisionist BS. The USSR collapsed because of two reasons. First it was not able to keep up with the US in weapons systems and at the same time provide consumer goods for its citizens. Second as Gorbechev losened the reigns the average Soviet began to understand just how poor their economy was at providing the goods westerners took for granted. It had very little to do with democracy, and everything to do with the economy. The average Russian simply got tired of getting the shaft while the elites got the goods.

Andrew did not mention the interent. Even though it was around before 1994, in fact it was invented in the 70's I believe as a means for scientists to communicate with each other even though it wasn't called the internet then. The Internet for the common person has also been around and available before 1994, maybe not in Russia but that just illustrates the point about the economy and government control on information. However I believe Andrew was talking about satelite communications not the internet. There has been instantaneous communications in the west for some time. Russia could have had it to, but that would have reduced the control the government had on the dissemination of information. Milie never assume, always ask.

I tell you again that your estimate is not totally correct. All you've pointed is the true but the true is that almost all countries of Middle Asia, Caspian-Caucasian states, Belorussia and Ukraine (except baltic states, of course) wanted to stay at USSR because that gave the preferences. The number of voices on referendum for staying in USSR was from 72 to 87% in those countries.

Russia has always sponsored those countries from the beginning of the USSR. Russia has produced the biggest part of USSR's national product. Almost all meanful industry was in Russia. The main reason why Russians have refused the USSR was nationalistic selfish interests to consume more and not to spend money on others. And just look on those countries at present. Russia have restored economy and economical growth is 6.5-7% per year while those countries returned to Middle Age with totalitarian leaders and avarage salary about 45-55$ per month.

I agree with you. Dialogue can be productive. But Iran doesn't need Nuclear energy. They have quite a bit of oil there as I recall. A good step for them would be to abandon their nuclear ambitions for now. It is because of Ahmadinejad's dialogue that we fear what he may do with nuclear capabilities anyway. It can't be a one side give and the other take situation. Russia, being allies with Iran, should encourage this. Tell them to put it on the back burner, and come up with talks of advancing Iran through peaceful means (yes I know he says peaceful nuclear ambitions, but the fact that it can be turned to weapons, isn't a good thing).

This is the dialogue that should happen. Not one in private rooms where Russia helps prop up Ahmadinejad.

I do compliment Russia on turning around. The country is coming from the worst fall in history and I am happy for its people and I think a strong Russia is good for the world. I just hope all of the efforts and successes aren't used to try to have a pissing war with the US and re-establish itself as a bullying power. This would be a horrible tribute to those who helped get Russia back on her feet.

The internet (not called that) for financial trading, government, and military apapeared in 1985. Before this there were networks spanning the western capitalist world. But you are right, it did not become widespread for home use until the mid 90's. The reason, I think, that Russian could not finance their peripheral nations (or themselves) is because their economy did not generate near as much capital as the western economy, due to the faster pace of the wired financial market, and the failure of the centrally planned state economy.
